    Socket 2011?

Bit out of touch with PC stuff these days, my current setup will show the sort of era I built my last PC in

So I'm looking to update my rig with new CPU, graphics card, motherboard and memory. I was thinking of a sandybridge i7 2600K CPU but I went to scan.co.uk to price stuff up and saw that there's now a Socket 2011 (sandy bridge enthusiast) section with CPUs in there.

What's this Socket 2011 then? Worth the extra over the 1155 stuff? The PC is mostly used for music and gaming but I also run some virtual machines and do video transcoding from time to time.

    Cheers in advance,
    8bit

to be honest for what you say you'll use your rig for, go for the 1155. Unless you need the extra power and future proof of the 'E' range then for for 2011/ but a 2500k OC or even a 2600k or IB OC will be fine you for you.

Most people wont need 2011, unless for specific reasons like 3d/rendering etc.

    Re: Socket 2011?

Thanks Adam. I tend not to upgrade very frequently these days (hence my ancient current system!) so some level of future-proofing would actually be a good thing.

That said though, I saw on the Hexus news pages some stuff about the Z77 chipset, that's based on LGA1155 isn't it? So I guess that package format isn't going away anytime soon?
