    fx 2nd gen question

does anyone know when the second gen fx chips of amd are to be released. my son is building a computer for next semester and he likes the 8 core 8250 but wants to game as well so he is looking at the fx-4170.(because it has a highbclock rate 4.2). for video he is looking at getting two amd cards-ghz edition but they have a gig of ram each. to top it off he is getting a 50 gig cache drive. any idea if this is a good build. personally i would love to see what a second gen cpu is capable of if it`s not too long to reach.

They are being released towards the end of the month. TBH,I would be looking at a Core i5 3570K if you have that level of CPU budget. The FX4300 series might be worth considering over a Core i3 though, since it can be overclocked.

What graphics cards is he looking at??

I really suggest to doesn't make SLI with FX processor, actually (if you look benchmarck, we can say that also a 7950 make your cpu chokes)... In fact often a FX4100-4170 make your sistem bottlenecking... i suggest to wait at 28th of october that piledriver comes, so you can decide to take a new-series cpu, or to buy an old FX cpu, maybe lower price...

thanks for the replies. we are looking at the amd a10 trinity and the fx-8350. the video cards will probably be amd 7900 series. the GHz editions sound nice but i want more than 1 gig of Vram personally.

Here is the Anandtech comparison of the A10 5800K vs 8350, check the last 4 graphs for games performance:

Agree with you on VRAM, 1GB is marginal these days and I would want more on any high end card.

    Re: fx 2nd gen question

Due to platform age, dual graphics cards tend to be more of a limitation on AM3+ than with socket 1155 it seems. The Core i5 3570K would be a better choice.

However, single card systems do better - I would consider the FX6300 or maybe the FX8320 once the initial £10 to £15 launch premium is gone. They should be reasonably fine for a gaming system - however,a Core i5 would have the edge on games based on older engines, although the new FX CPUs do do well in games based on newer engines like BF3.
