i5 3570k with Scythe Mine RevB.

Hi folks,
I'm planning a new build and would like to know if my Scythe Mine cooler would be good enough on the i5, it is currently on my Q6600 and cools well. I can get mounting clips to enable it to fit the 1155 platform. What do you think, use it or sell it with my Q6600 and buy another cooler?

It's easy to say that it's a six year old cooler, replace it. But I think it would be a good idea to check the TDP of the processors of the time like the E6400 and see how that compares to the 77 watt TDP of the i5 now. I'd imagine the i5 has a lower rating and if it does your Scythe should be fine.

Thanks keyboardDemon, the TDP of my Q6600 is 105W max, so hopefully I can use my Scythe for the i5.

Glad to have been able to help. With my 3770k overclocked CPUID registers 99 watts of power draw, I'm not sure how that translates to heat but I think you might even find that the cooler you have will allow for moderate overclocking should you decide to try it, I think the cooler itself is good for upto 150 watts and the QX9650 was rated at 130 watts.

Scythe Mine should be fine for an i5. I've got an Athlon X2 (65W version iirc) under one and it runs very cool indeed - there's plenty of heat handling capacity. Intel's TDPs have been getting steadily lower over the last few years. Sadly with IB they switched from solder between the silicon and the heatspreader to thermal paste, so actually the chips itself is a bit of a flaw in the cooling plan! But under a Scythe Mine you should be able to comfortably eep the heat under control and get a bit of an overclock

Thanks for all replies. I have just realised that my fan on the cooler is a 3 pin, does anyone know of a 4 pin quiet fan I could replace it with, either 92mm to 120 mm? I have got the Asus P8Z77-V Pro m/board and would like to use the fan features of this board.

I'd measure up the fan, particularly the depth, before you change it. I know they use a custom 100mm fan, but I don't know if it's a standard 25mm depth or not OK, I checked and it is a standard 25mm deep fan. Whilst a 92mm fan would probably do the job it won't be quite as effective as the original fan.

FWIW, I can't hear the fan on mine despite it running through a 3pin connector. You'll also probably find that you can persuade your motherboard to control the fanb speed even without PWM (although PWM is definitely more reliable ).

Thanks Scaryjim, it's fairly quiet in my system, so I think I'll leave it on for now and see how it performs. Why my better half tells me to wait for Christmas before my build I'll never know (women !!!)
