    Gaming processor Help

Hi, i need some help with getting a new processor for gaming.

I currently have a Bulldozer fx 4100, i know they are not a great processor when it comes to gaming.
I currently run a Radeon 7950 and it does not run well with the bulldozer so i just want some help with getting a new processor for gaming and that will run fast and well.

It would be more preferable to get AMD processor so i would not have to change mobo. play games like BF3, Simcity, Counter strike, Far cry 3. Some one suggested AMD Phenom II x4 and just wanted some suggestions if there is better for my price range.

    My Budget is - £120 ($151)

what motherboard have you got (there are a few different versions of yours)? find it in here and see what's compatible, there will probably be a better option for that price.

i use this to compare cpu's. there's not much of a difference between your current one and the x4 970, or at least not enough to justify that much spondoola.

swing over to overclockers, there's an fx 8150 for £90.

i was tempted by it, but the mobo i had my eye on was too pricey.

The FX6300 would do the job very well. The FX6300 does seem to do better in most games than a FX8150 it seems, and moreover the lower 95W TDP would be more suitable for your motherboard.

    Re: Gaming processor Help

The motherboard the OP has, uses a 4+1 phase VRM with no cooling. IMHO,an FX6300 would be a safer bet,ie,less chance of the VRMs throttling.

    Re: Gaming processor Help

Does it? The -LE and -LX versions are 95W CPU rated, the -LX V2 and LX Plus are 125W rated, the /USB3 version is 140W and looks like a 5+1 layout.

Can you tell us exectly which version of motherboard it is please.

    Re: Gaming processor Help

    VRM isn't CPU cooling:

    http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_2800.html

that's VRM cooling , you put in on your mosfets to cool them under higher load ; mine actually gets quite warm since I added it!

    Re: Gaming processor Help

It was cooling for the CPU voltage regulators that HalloweenJack was specifically referring to.

many uATX format motherboards are engineered to be cheap and can't take top of the range processors as they can't supply enough current, the regulators overheat. You have the top of that motherboard range which allows for 140W CPUs (the hungriest AMD made) so as long as the airflow in your case is good then you should be fine with an 8350.

You can get little heatsinks to go on the VRM transistors to give them an easier time coping with sustained high load.

Edit to add: I should learn to type faster

I have a gigabyte ga770ta-ud3 , which is also rated up to 140w (8+2) and yet it didn't come with vrm cooling.... but the one I added still gets quite warm at times (well hot!)
