    Intel - Haswell chitchat

Seems with the recent Anandtech website redesign I failed to see this interesting snippet:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/6898/i...at-idf-beijing

Now that looks quite interesting. The article says this won't bring back the days of the Celeron 300A, but if a budget 2.4GHz cpu is released then a 67% overclock would get you a cool 4GHz. Which would be nice

Integrated voltage regulator looks undervolt friendly too from the graphs they show.

Still doesn't really tell us anything yet imo.

    Eagerly awaiting the full review.

Think you missed the next sentence

The days of the Celeron 300A aren't coming back. Intel isn't a fan of giving things away for free and I wouldn't expect that to change now, especially given AMD's current competitive position.
Yes, Intel like to milk their customers but for every 'enthusiast' who purchases a K series chips there must be a fair few cheapskate enthusiasts who would love to take a Celeron or Pentium to the limit. Suspect that Intel will not have anything as competitive as the overclockable Core2 Celeron/Pentiums again though. Which means there will be some fuses blown etc. to make the cheap parts less interesting.

Good to see this from Anand though:
(sidenote: this is why we need AMD, ARM only pushes Intel to be more competitive on power at this point).
ARM vs Atom battery benchmarks sponsored by Intel PR aside, at least he's not one of those AT Forum posters who are looking forward to the day when Intel can charge whatever they like. Cannot believe any consumer actually arguing that a lack of competition would be a good thing, but there you go: AT Forum posters + turkeys + Christmas. Incredible.

Oh, this thread has about 1300 posts to go to catch up with the Piledriver one!

    Re: Intel - Haswell chitchat

Oh I did see that, and tbh I don't think they really are. Same as it was with the classic celery 300.

If you buy a mainstream chip that clocks at 3GHz, you can't apply a 67% uplift to it as it (probably) won't do 5GHz.

So you have to buy something very low end to get to use the 67% boost. That will mean dual core, a compromise that most people won't wear these days. In the same way, the tiny cache of the Celeron 300A put power users off that.

The 25% boost may be more flexible, but not as headline grabbing as 4GHz for peanuts.
