Question Good CPU Score For Overclock? i7 4770k XTU

    Hi People,

I have a i7 4770k as you might be able to tell either from the systems tab or the title of this post . Anyway getting to the point how well do you think this chip is doing? http://hwbot.org/submission/2405199_...70k_1014_marks To get any were near this speed I have to give the CPU around 1.38-1.4V I have an H80i on the cooling side but although I'm not running at that speed or voltage for any more then 10-mins how safe would you say this is?

    Many Thanks,
    Kieran

Well in terms of worldwide ranking you're just outside the top quartile and easily above average, with some clever tweaking (don't ask me how though) you could probably push that a bit higher, but I think 4.7ghz is a pretty good result, my Ivy Bridge gets unstable around 4.6ghz, again I would probably get more from it if I had better cooling and knew more about overclocking.

Hay, have you downloaded the 3dmark 13 benchmark, That way you can compare your scores with the rest of your fellow hexus members. http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware/...re-thread.html

Re: Good CPU Score For Overclock? i7 4770k XTU

As long as your temps are staying under control you're fine. 4.7GHz is a very decent overclock (some people can't get over 4.4GHz stable), Haswell gets too hot for it to be worth it much higher than that. 1.38v is pretty high mind you, so keep an eye on the temps. With some other tweaks (e.g. LLC settings, etc) you may be able to get stable at a lower voltage. Under 1.35v is ideal.

If you do want to run with a high overclock be sure to have the power saving C states enabled/Speedstep, so it clocks down when it can.

Yer I thought I was lucky with the chip I have so for once I was lucky normal I have bad luck so YAY to me having a good chip. Ill try and get it with a lower voltage like you said maybe 1.35v ish. Also when I enable any power saving features it just kills the PC and I end up with BSOD...

Re: Good CPU Score For Overclock? i7 4770k XTU

That sounds like you've perhaps not got the LLC settings optimal. The setting name depends on which board you've got. If it's not high enough then when your CPU takes on extra load, the voltage will fall a lot and you'll get a BSOD. Pushing up the voltage higher gets around that, as when it falls under load it's still ok, but getting rid of that drop is better.

Re: Good CPU Score For Overclock? i7 4770k XTU

Somewhere I read that 1.20-1.25v should be the highest at long term functioning with Haswell CPUs.
I would personally optimize the consumption. See what I can reach highest without burning the chip and then somwhere below that where it can function at 1.25v or below with C states and without BSOD at long term load.
Recently one Haswell 4670k at 1.23v with all the power saving functions and up to C3 states remained stable @ 4.4Ghz.
C3 only cause PSU don't support the new Haswell C states - could be a reason for your BSOD???

Re: Good CPU Score For Overclock? i7 4770k XTU

What I've generally seen is that 1.25v is what you aim for on air, up to 1.35 on water.

But if temps are under control that's all that matters really.

Mine needs about 1.3v with a couple of BIOS tweaks to be stable at 4.6GHz, and temps stay around 70C at load. I haven't played enough with it yet to try higher.
