New CPU for my virtual server box (late night eBay purchase...)

    Here's hoping it works...

    ...
    ...
    ...

It seems to run fine in my main PC (easier to swap it into that than my virtual server box for now). I hadn't realised it was a 32nm chip (rather than 45nm like my i7 960):

Priming it now - seems to run really cool compared to my i7 960:

...though it obviously isn't clocked anywhere near as high (max 2.66GHz rather than 3.46GHz, nominal 2.133GHz rather than 3.2GHz, appears to stick at 2.13GHz when running 100% on all threads).

    And it overclocks too!

    Primed at 3.2GHz (16 * 200) / 1.2V and the highest core temp is hovering around 52c (lowest 47c)
Now trying 3.6GHz (18 * 200) / 1.3V, no hotter than 54c so far (lowest 48c) - at this rate I might end up keeping it in my main rig and ordering another one

About £100 with postage from the US and import duty paid. It was intended to replace an i7 920 which should fetch about £50 back when I sell it. The eBay seller has actually dropped the price on their latest auction and it would work out at ~£85 all in now:

(oh and it passed an hour of Prime 95 blend at 3.6GHz / 1.3V no problem, going to try it with less threads now to see if it's stable at the full 4GHz it will turbo up to @ 200MHz BLCK)

Re: New CPU for my virtual server box (late night eBay purchase...)

Update - had to bump the voltage settings up to stay 100% stable (BIOS set to 1.35V core, 1.3V VTT) but it is fully stable now and even overclocked it runs cooler than my i7 960 did (with a Thermalright Archon sat on it). I'm keeping it in my main rig and have ordered another one for my virtual server box (which won't be overclocked).

1.35V / 1.3V is probably higher than I need but I haven't had the time to tune it down yet (it's 100% stable now so will just drop the volts bit by bit until it gets wonky again then add a bit extra on - hopefully job done).

Good luck and well done. Wonder how much you could under clock it while maintaining stock speeds.

I might find out when the 2nd one arrives and I stick it in my virtual server box (though I'm not 100% that motherboard supports voltage changes). As you can see from the top screenshot, CPU-Z thinks the default voltage (at 2133MHz) is just under a volt anyway.

I would sleep still better if I would know that my system is effective as it gets (lowest voltage while maintaining stock speed and stability).

Nice deal. It's cool to see that socket 1366 still go strong. I would love to replace my quad core phenom with this baby. Ohhh you could do so much virtualzition with it :-)
