    i5 750 suddenly running hot

    Hi All,

Right, before I go and buy a new "overclocked bundle" - just trying a last ditch plea for help.

Had my original 3xs build for about 3 or 4 years now and its been a dream, not a days problem with it. Yesterday, thought i would just run Prime 95, don't know why, but i did.

Temps went scorching hot at 80 degrees. Its currently sitting idle at 46 degrees. Not had any crashes or anything out of it at all, and prime 95 can sit there and run with it hitting 80 degrees without anything nasty happening.

So, i thought i would check the cooler, so removed it (Akasa Freedom Tower) saw the AS was all dried out, so replaced it reattached and still get the 46 idle, 80 load temps - checked it again, just incase it wasn't seated properly and its still those temps.

It was an O/C 3xs back when i bought it Scan Clocked at 3.8, and it was always 36 idle, 70 load - not as cool as i would have liked, but has worked perfect for the past 3 years.

80 degrees is worrying me though. (at stock, its 35 idle and 50 under load)

Just wondering if anyone can think of any other reason it could be so high?

3.8 cpu at 1.325, IMC 1.3, CPU PLL 2 and PCH at 1.15 - everything else Auto and fine.

I was about to buy a new cooler to give that a try, but not convinced that will help as the Akasa is 100% attached properly and all Arctic Silvered up.

Wifey has suggested i spend the £400 on a 3XS Z87 OC5 - Intel Core i5 4670K - Overclocked to 4.2Ghz (with the Corsair Hydro cooler), but before i spend that kind of money - any thoughts?

New cooler or new OC Bundle?

Lol, i would prefer not to spend if i don't have to.......

    Thanks

80 is not high for a high voltage overclock on prime 95. It'll throttle before it gets too hot, but I think you're a way off that temperature yet.

Re: i5 750 suddenly running hot

Hi Kalniel, Thanks for that - Just been running prime 95 again for a few hours, and its maxed out to around 84 degrees.

I'm wondering some people are suggesting that there are not that many benefits to going for a i5 4670 from a i5 750 at 3.8, so I should just try a better cooler? Do you think that would be worth it - current Akasa Freedom tower is running flat out at 1700 rpm, pushing 57.32 cfm, so could I try a better cooler? Just 84 is very close to tj max of 99 and that's pushing it to its limit - so would like to try and keep it in its mid to high 70's if possible

Re: i5 750 suddenly running hot

Well 84 is still 15C away from tjMax that's loads in a world where changes of materials and coolers only makes a few degrees difference (unless there's a problem).

If you want to drop as far as 70 on a prime run then you may need to drop voltage so less heat is produced in the first place. It will depend on your chip, but try getting an overclock of around 3.6ghz on a voltage no more than about 1.25Vcore, and get that PLL voltage down a tad too.

Re: i5 750 suddenly running hot

Corsair H90 would do the job, my i5-2500K runs on 4.5Ghz at 1.32V idle 35, full load 60, ant Fan is on 50%. Ofcourse i gto Fractal Design XL R2 sporting 6 Fractal fans, but thats doesnt make dramatical difference compare to cheap cases, its max 5 degrees celsius.

Re: i5 750 suddenly running hot

Just a thought but have you tried cleaning out the rest of the system? i.e. the fan filters and so on? You haven't mentioned that in your original post.
I can't imagine it would make 10c difference but it can't hurt. Also 84 on prime 95 is fine. Its never going to get near that with regular gaming loads.

Re: i5 750 suddenly running hot

How long is it since you last ran Prime 95? If it's been a while the most likely explanation is dust clogging the fans/filters and CPU cooler: take all the fans off everything, give everything a really good clean, then put them all back on and have another go.

Then think about the environmental changes - have you moved the computer to a different room, or made any changes to the room it's in? What time of year was it when you bought the computer and Prime 95'd it? It could be as simple as the ambient temperature just being higher now, or the heating being turned on or turned up more.

As others have said, 84C at unrealistically high load is nothing to worry about - if it's doing Prime 95 @ 50C stock then the cooler and fans are all obviously working properly.

Re: i5 750 suddenly running hot

Hi All, thanks for the help. Yes, Im a nerd for a clean inside of PC, so I make sure that it never has the slightest bit of dust. It sounds like its been running warm for a while, just never noticed it :-/

Dropped it back to stock and its 28 idle and 45 running prime 95, so it has to be the overclock. (Its so quiet now, its quieter than my Proliant Home Server!)In the usual spirit of doing the wrong thing, I have gone for a i5 4670 k build :-0 Should keep me busy for another year or two.....

Got another PSU and Case ram etc etc, so im going to leave the i5 750 at stock and put in an old XFX 8800 and use it to replace my WHS2011 setup, now that should handle transcoding better than the Proliant!

Thanks again for all the suggestions, i'll be back in a week about overclocking the 4670 and probably moaning about temps - although have gone for a Dark Rock 2 - should do the trick
(If it fits, manufacturer says it will, supplier website doesn't mention socket 1150, only 1156.....)

Re: i5 750 suddenly running hot

I've been on the "should I upgrade" chip for a while now but instead I just ended up getting a H100i and overclocking my i5 560 to 4.2Ghz - temp tops out about 45C after a heavy game session and about 60C on a Prime run.

Re: i5 750 suddenly running hot

The temperature seems too high, I guess you need to clean the fan, maybe Silver is not properly attached or used too much of those stuff, my cpu used to run up to 90 when the fan is totally covered by dust.

Re: i5 750 suddenly running hot

Prime95 will always produce higher temps but those stated don't seem excessive.

To give you a direct comparison, my i5-750 clocked @ 4ghz, 1.352vCore (everything else auto) runs Prime95 at 80oC too (just tested) using an old LGA775 Themalright 120 Ultra Extreme cooler and SilenX 120mm fan.
