Just had a reply from OCUK, the processor has been replaced, turns out it was faulty, they're shipping me a new one today.

Good result, though there seemed to be little doubt that something was up with your CPU; those temps were way too high for stock.

I am having a similar problem with a 4790K reaching crazy temps under load and surfing around the net there seem to be a bunch of people saying the same, maybe a bad batch ? Or maybe they stretched the binning a little too tight and a % of all the 4790ks are like this.

What temps are you seeing, & which cooler are you using? Are the temps at stock or overclocked?

YES, the cooler does not fit!
the 4790k known to produce alot of heat!
the BOX cooler will give you 100C on LOAD _ (but not a big aftermarket cooler)! 100%!@
    iv tested it myself!
some cooler just dont sit good on the this specific CPU! (like the EVO and scythe)

believe me, you got a monster under your hand. just find the right cooler (NOCTUA is the best!)

    this is from me:
1st i tried the BOX fan.
the box fan was 40c on idle _ and 100c when converting MKV to AVI (110c in seconds)
i removed the box fan and installed it again and test.-> i did that three times.
on all three times i got 100-110C from the BOX fan!

when i installed the Noctua NH-C12P SE14 i got this:
    on idle 33C
on LOAD (prime95 and some conversation works) 71c MAX!

    my conclusion is this:
you need to use a good custom fan!
the idle fan would be somthing that came to the market when ivy-B was released (or atleast Sandy-B)

some technicians in a few computer shops i know told me "NO WAY! _ the BOX Cooler should be anough"
Today i TELL them: "WRONG"! Its not enough!

    thread opener:
you and me are not the only ones who got it,
iv seen at least 10 threads with same temps.

    cheers

Hey, I am in the same situation. Got the Maximus VII + 4790k in a bundle from overclockers, and the cpu was running at @ 52 in idle 4.0Ghz and @ 55 idle at 4.4Ghz turbo mode.

Prime 95 small test sent it under 4Ghz in under a minute (flooring 100 degrees on all cores), throttling kicked in. Voltage was 1.175 on 4.4Ghz and no other changes were made in Bios. Even tried 4 different bios versions for the motherboard without any result.

Cooling is the stock cooler, but even with that it shouldn't be that high in idle, should it?

Anyway, the chip is in RMA, waiting for their reply. Did you buy the bundle from them as well? Also, what did they say was wrong with the CPU ?

Re: Struggling with heat generated from i7-4790k

They never came back to me with an actual reason, they just shipped a new CPU out, I guess I should test it really, it's been sat on a shelf ever since I received it as I bought a new processor while the faulty one was being RMA'd as I have a distinct lack of patience.

I didn't get a bundle, just got an OEM chip from OCUK, just seems like a dodgy batch if it's happening to multiple people.

Re: Struggling with heat generated from i7-4790k

Newer batches don't seem to have heating problems.

(this isn't a statistical fact, but based on my findings and a friend's experience, seems like a good basis)

Of course this is assuming it isn't user error.

    Shoddy thermal agent application
