    Question (i5) Skylake or 4690k

What i5 should i go for?
Skylake is roughly same price but i'd have to then buy more expensive motherboards as well as DDR4.
Is there any benefit or getting skylake then?

    Re: (i5) Skylake or 4690k

Only my opinion, formed from just things I thought and not necessarily technical info.

I was building new rig in Jan/Feb15, Skylake / Broadwell was in pipeline but decided to go Z97 / 4690K.

    Why?

I thought I'd rather have a mature platform to deal with / use. I couldn't see myself needing some of the benefits Skylake / mobo chipset was bringing to table. Performance on Skylake taking perhaps premium of price at launch made also Z97 / 4690K more appealing.

    So far no regrets.

All in all with some savvy buying my {CPU / Mobo / RAM / Cooler} in my sig set me back about £300. 16GB was a bit steeper at that time, I paid £95. The £300 figure is made up from some discounting a) from buying promo prices for item b) cashback via say one of those kinda sites c) selling a bundled item I didn't need with mobo.

The I5 6600K is anoticable improvement over an I5 4690k with the witcher 3 having an increase of around 5-6 FPS as well as the new skylake chips being more cool running than devils canyon also there is a promotion on at dabs where you get a free asus cerberus headset with any Maximus VIII ranger or Maximus VIII Hero which is worth £40 this promotion bring the price of skylake down to devils canyon levels

The biggest differences would be 1. overclocking potential 2. DDR4 RAM and 3. More lanes for all your connected components.

I would say go with what is more affordable for you as a package, Skylake is an improvement but in terms of gaming the difference is pretty minute.

DDR3 is on the way out so maybe if your budget allows for it go for skylake as it will give you upgrade room later (without needing cpu + mobo + ram combo).

To me the only upgrade would seem an owner of a Skylake i5 would do is go i7 and by the time a vastly better CPU is out on the market I'd think CPU + MOBO + RAM would need changing anyhow (generally speaking).

For "future proofing" I always just get a new GPU for a rig. I tend to opt for a CPU which is not a bottleneck for the best GPU in my budget at build time and then opt for GPU upgrades til CPU becomes a bottleneck.

To me it seems as OP is considering a Skylake vs i5 4690K his rig's purpose is gonna be general use/gaming, otherwise it would be Skylake vs i7 4790K, or a more higher end CPU.

Are you saying that due to me stating upgrade path of i7?
