    16-core Xeon with 45W TDP

Intel is reading 16-core Xeon D-1571 processor for microservers

Intel Gets Sixteen "Broadwell" Cores to Run at 45W TDP

Cool or what? With HT that equals 32 threads too bad the price is hardly consumer friendly. Maybe Dell or HP will have a crazy cashback at some point with these chips.

Fantastic power saving for this chip and we can keep on wishing...
There are also some nice 8 core Atom chips with H/T out there, they use even less power.

Re: 16-core Xeon with 45W TDP

Meh, they're very niche products. You have to be sure your workload is parallel rather than linear because they've only managed that by keeping clock speeds relatively low.

In fact, the last couple of generations of low power Xeons from Intel have been a bit underwhelming, IMNSHO.

    Take the E3 1220L family (2 core, 4 thread): http://ark.intel.com/compare/53401,65735,75051

    v1: 20W, 2.2GHz - 3.4GHz
    v2: 17W, 2.3GHz - 3.5Ghz
    v3: 13W, 1.1GHz - 1.5GHz?!

So moving from v1 - v2 you drop 3W and increase the clock speeds, moving from v2 - v3 you drop 4W and half the clock speeds. Odd decision....

    The E3 1260L series were a little better: http://ark.intel.com/compare/88175,8...63,65728,52275

but there's not much difference between those really: predominantly 45W, v1 - v3 were just minor clock speed tweaks. The v4 drops the TDP along with a slight cut in clock speeds, but boosts the GPU to Iris Pro, but the v5 pushes the TDP back to 45W, ditches the graphics completely, and boosts the clock speeds instead, so not much consistency.

Interestingly, the V5 series ditches the 2-core 1220L completely, and instead drops in a 25W 1235L with 4 cores but no HT, running at 2GHz - 3GHz. To me that doesn't look like an improvement on a 17W HT dual core at 2.3GHz - 3.5GHz....

So yeah, in my head the low power Xeon game hasn't really moved on since the L3426: 4 Core, 8 thread, 45W, 1.86GHz - 3.2GHz... and you can still pick those up on ebay at reasonable prices...

Fair enough still the lack of corresponding ITX motherboards is sad ...

Re: 16-core Xeon with 45W TDP

niche products and to be honest I'd be more impressed if they managed to keep more speed in them, you might as well get the 8core 16thread at 2.1ghz and pay under half the price while losing hardly any real performance (unless you specifically need 8 single threads at the same time where it 'might' be faster but unlikely). You can pretty much have an infinite number of cores if you keep slowing them down to hit within a threshold, doesn't mean it will perform better.
