    Re: i3 Gaming Build

I will probably go with the i3, been watching videos on YouTube and seems to be good bang for the buck. I am set on the Z170, just not sure what brand or version to buy? Any recommendations, as overclocking will feature at some point after the build. Thanks for all the advice so far folks, appreciate it.

Dude, seriously unless you are willing to go secondhand and try and do what I did with my Core i3 upgrade path its not really worth it and I was quite dilligent at the time on getting a good deal. Plenty of RTS and other games push threads and single threaded performance.

Look at something like the turn based Civ6 - it does far better on systems with more cores and as more and more games move to newer engines you will start to see how things will go.

More games are pushing threads and you are going to have a worse system running a Core i3 and a Z170 motherboard. The whole point is you need to look ahead a few years too - RTS games will come out then, and there is no guarantee they will be fine on a Core i3.

    Plus TBH,you can get a Core i5 6500 for £145 from CEX:

It has two years warranty and you will need to get a cooler but you can get one for £15.

i5 6400? Don't want to be spending a fortune on something I'm not going to push to it's limits. Only want to play games like Planet Coaster, Rollercoaster Tycoon World, Sims 4 and other sim games. Not interested in FPS games or racing, I have a console for that stuff. Just miss the sim and RTS games.

A Core i5 6500 can be had for £145 from CEX with a two year warranty. You can get the Intel stock cooler for £5 or a better one for like £15 or so.

You said RTS games and thats the problem. RTS and turned based games are some of the most CPU taxing games out there. There is an increasing movement of all games towards using more and more threads in general down to those consoles since they have 8 cores.

Older RTS games tended to push only a few threads, but others tend to be smoother on more threads too. The whole point you are building a PC to last a few years,so ultimately, you are wasting more money on getting a RX480 8GB over a RX470 for those games.

I went the Core i3 route but it made sense since I calculated the best time to sell my Core i3 and make my upgrade to a Core i5 pretty cheap and I did the same when I upgraded to a Core i7. But you need to be on the ball regarding secondhand prices to make it viable.

Plus with the Z170 motherboard unless you are intending to buy a K series CPU in the next year or so,does it really make much sense in buying one??

I stopped overclocking CPUs 5 years ago and not missed it since TBH!!

    Re: i3 Gaming Build

Planet coaster is a bit of an animal, minimum CPU spec is an i5 2300.

My wife tried playing it, her FX 6350 is above the 4 core minimum but her R7 360 is too low end, and the game crashes. Lots.

She wants Civ 6 for Christmas, her PC is well above minimum spec for that but the recommended spec is pretty high, so I expecting that to be a bit iffy too on her current card.

Modern strategy games seem very harsh, I can't see why but they are.

    Re: i3 Gaming Build

When I built my PC I had to choose between a beefy CPU or beefy graphics card. In the end I went with a slightly less beefy cpu and i3 but a more beefy graphics card and I think I made the right decision, in terms of gaming i3 is still more than capable with it's 4 threads.
