Thanks dances. I was wondering about a a320 so good to know to avoid it. Was tempted by a basic gigabyte b450 board but you are right to recommend a 4 slot board. I was very grateful to go from 8 to 16gb half way through my systems life... Decisions decisions. I don't see much point getting a 3600 with the view to get say a 3800 later as I found with the 3570k, a 3770k held its value way to long as everyone wanted the same upgrade! I guess a 3600x might be a good compromise... I shall have to see what I get bonus wise.

The 3770k was top of the line for the 1155 chipset. The 3600x or 3700x are a long way off the 3950x which is top dog. IMO its not worth aiming for resale on amd CPUs, historically they do not keep their value.

I think zen3 will be am4 compatible. DDR5 may be mainstream after......

From the benchmarks the 3600X is just a hotter more expensive 3600, only worth getting if the price difference is small.

better cooler though - however IMO too noisy to merit the uplift. I always go 3rd party for that. In theory the x chips have been binned to be better performing than the non-x variants, but I've read so many reviews suggesting the real difference is peanuts once you stick the same cooler on both.

If you are getting a B450 motherboard, the MSI B450 Mortar Max,B450 Tomahawk Max and the B450 Gaming Pro Carbon Max are the amongst best B450 motherboards out there.

I've left lots of thanks for all the advice. Think I might just get a 3600 and upgrade the cooler later. It'll let me spread the cost out but still be a big jump. Guess it's worth replacing my 7+ year old PSU just to be safe (sorry for the thread hijack - this has been really useful guidance everyone).

Funny you should mention that, my 6 year old PSU has just started having issues (occasional brownouts on the 12v rail under full load, of course the warranty was just for 5 years. Luckily it works fine at idle, so a pretty graceful failure mode). New one is on order, once that arrives I can play around with tests like this again

Sounds like there's not much point in upgrading coolers past the AMD stock one then?

I'm under the impression that you can monitor your psu rails with software. While stressing if within the 5% varience its ok? Keen to hear other opinions.

You can, which is how I know it's the 12v rail the MB reports the 12v is averaging at a decent value under load (12.08 V) but with occasional drops. - the lowest I saw was 11.1 V, and the system rebooted soon after (event log recorded a complaint from the power kernel). My GPU also complains about the "performance limit - reliability voltage", one that the HWiNFO author doesn't know what it means, but with the other data I strongly suspect the GPU is getting offended at the inconsistent supply

New PSU is in and fixed the crashes, with a nice solid 12 V rail. The "reliability voltage" warnings didn't go away, but are more frequent when I turn down the power target of the card using EVGA precision XOC - I suspect the card is complaining about too little core voltage for the desired speed, not any issues with the incoming supply

My 10 yr+ CWT 550w via corsair is still <2% out. Maybe she has had a good life.

Just to let you guys know I've gone for a 3600 with msi b450 Gaming pro carbon (I wanted a mortar but it's all sold out and I want pcie WiFi which would have been the difference in price). Going to try and cope with the included wraith cooler for now based on your review. Quite tempted by the style of a spire rgb but loathed to spend £20 on an OEM cooler. Just wish I could get an adaptor for my hyper 212 but it'll cost more than half the price of new 212....
