    CPU reaches +90C while gaming

    Hello.

I just upgraded my CPU from a Intel i5 8400 to a i7 9700. I updated my BIOS because my pc would not start up. I got all of that figured out and then went to play a couple of games of Valorant. Normally my fans would not get loud at all because it is not a demanding game, but after making the switch my CPU temp was around 90C and my CPU fan was just so loud. I am not sure what to do... (The fans would run at max speed the entire time and also on other games.)

    Intel i7 9400
    AsRock B360 Pro4
    Corsair 16gb RAM
    NVIDIA 1070Ti
    Stock CPU fan

    What are idle temps?
Is the CPU down clocking; is it oc'd? Check clock speeds and voltages. Dpea taking the side panel off make a big difference?
If this was me I would assume the cooler is not mounted properly.

If its a brand new processor, did you take the plastic cover off the bottom of the cpu cooler(if it has a plastic cover)

If it was a used cpu did you apply new thermal paste?

The stock fan won't help for sure but it should be capable of a bit better than 90c. Sounds like something isn't quite with the heat transfer. Make sure the mounting is correct, and there's enough pressure on the CPU from the cooler - screw with confidence.

Though apparently that chip runs hot :

If it's the stock Intel cooler,it's a piddly piece of aluminium, and I would never trust it for the higher end Intel CPUs,such as the Core i7 9700 non-K. I also hope it isn't the Core i5 8400 stock cooler on it either!!

This. Don't let the same 65W TDP for each chip fool you.

Get another cooler - there are loads of cheap ones that are orders of magnitude better than the Intel stock PoS.

If you're skint and can't afford it right now - see what voltage options you have in the BIOS and google an undervolting guide to help with temps in the interim.

    Hi,

I have heard lots of good things about the Snowman T4 CPU cooler, you'll have to buy it via Aliexpress thou.

If you dont mind the slow boat from China you can pick it up for £14 or so delivered.

Looking at the blurb it looks to support your CPU & motherboard socket.

Mine should be arriving in the next couple of weeks.

    Hope the above helps.

    Thanks.

The Cooler Master Evo range has been around for donkeys years and for good reason. They're cheap, they do the job and they have good compatibility. Plenty of stock from UK retailers too I'd imagine.

Yeah, I've been using them for decades and they were always best when it comes to price/quality

+90C is quite common under heavy load. However, if its throttling even at idle, you are in for some trouble my friend.

not only did you switch to CPU with higher number of cores you also took one with higher clock rate
your old fans do not ready for this
you should buy better ones or check out heat fluid
    maybe it got corrupted

As others have mentioned, you've upgraded to a CPU which puts out quite a bit more heat. The stock Intel cooler is easily beaten by aftermarket coolers for not much money.

Cooler Master range is good value as stated, Noctua are great performers but no need to spend that much unless you really care that much about noise (have an old Noctua C14 in one of my current builds, great cooler)

Change the cooler, add a few fans like aero cool duo 12 and carry on playing
