    5700G vs 5700X Question

I currently have the Ryzen 7 5700G. I have a B550 mainboard but because of the G processor it limits the PCI-e to 3.0 even know the board supports 4.0. The mainboard is a Asus rog strix b550-f gaming.

However am I right in thinking that if I get the Ryzen 7 5700X this will enable PCI-e 4.0

Yes, that should give you PCIe 4.0, and a bit of a boost from more cache and cpu frequency as well.

As I thought, thanks for confirming, looking at a change to Intel as well at the moment but looking at options

    Re: 5700G vs 5700X Question

Second-hand market for your 5700G should be pretty strong, and the faster 5000 series CPU's should drop straight in..

However, I get the feeling that you arent 100% sold on your upgrade path given the looking at Intel side of things.
What are you feeling you are missing, and what do you want to play that you cant play at the minute on the existing rig?

    Re: 5700G vs 5700X Question

Oh don't get me wrong, the system plays games just fine, but I have some PCI-e 4 nvme and the graphics card and they are all running pci-e 3 speeds. Now looking online at benchmarks etc the speed difference is miniscule in real life.

So a quick processor change would get me that pci-e 4.

It's a pretty shallow reason I grant you. But you know when you are looking at prices, you then start thinking if I am going to pay that for a processor I could pay a bit extra and get that. And then there is this crackle sound I get while playing games etc, a lot of people have reported the same issue with my board. So was thinking about changing that as well. At this point I am looking at the motherboard and cpu.

Then I thought you know what I have had AMD for so so long now. Intel seem to be doing well with the 13600K, I could get one of those, a new motherboard and some DDR5 ram. Selling all my stuff I would get about 50/60% of the cost back and gives me something to do on a Saturday.

So if you are still with me at this point I think in the end it just came down to change. Fancied a change and talked myself into it lol

    Re: 5700G vs 5700X Question

I'm sort of in the same camp, I have a PCIe 4.0 capable 5900X in a PCIe 3 X470 motherboard.

Right now it doesn't matter, but when I change video cards (and the 7800 XT is tempting) then I will have to resist the itch

It can be quite hard I think when you look at changing one component to stop yourself from changing a lot.

    Re: 5700G vs 5700X Question

I went from a PCIe x3 NVME drive to a x4, and noticed no difference despite the, on paper, difference in performance.
I haven't been impressed by SSD speeds since I got my first one and went from a spinner to an OCZ Vertex drive...

Indeed, that seems to be the concensus as I said above, results are miniscule but yeah minds made up, Intel it is, we can put all that bad stuff behind us and start again

    Re: 5700G vs 5700X Question

Just to say Jon, I wouldn't really touch Intel with all the errata for at least another generation, but that's only because Ryzen's multithread (SMT or Hyperthread) problem is getting patched, at least on decent 4xx and 5xx series boards and for say around 3600x + processors (so 3000 series). I'm not sure on 3000G series but they may have to patch them.

I'm sure you don't do anything dodgy though, you're a moderator, but avast on my main workstation keeps blacklisting URLs and I have no idea what my chrome browser extensions are doing so I prefer to play it safe.

This comes from working at MSI and checking processor errata as part of my job. Intel is VERY lax and just tries to sell you something faster in my estimation.
Depends how much you like to game (and your Saturday). If your mind is made up, so be it, but Ryzen 5 (as in, AM5) is sure to get patched if the steppings are currently up to it. The main exploit to worry about right about now is the one where if you load a webpage it can read your passwords entered in another tab (which is currently true of this system... lol).

If only you had said that yesterday lol. Intel equipment on the way!

Yes I am extremely boring when it comes to web viewing, I have several pages I go to and thats it really and its generally the news, hexus and a couple of other sites.

Will see how it turns out and if its bad I will be reporting back in a few months time and if you see me posting loads of spam you know it didn't go well

    Re: 5700G vs 5700X Question

I do apologist Jon. Intel may well have fixed the major errata but the thing is I wouldn't put it past them to only do so in the server chips this gen and gloss over it!

Anyway I thought you might have already bought. The chances of this hitting you are almost nil (except embedded adverts by accident kind of thing) so I do hope you enjoy your new fast Intel system. I am well aware that Intel are again faster but you wouldn't catch my trying an AIO yet so perhaps I'm quite out of date

Pew Pew. It's Eve Fanfest, y'know, well worth watching Eve TV. I'm playing Eve again maybe but 96 quid a year currently and that's a lot so I will probably try and play in demo mode and see if it grows on me... you could try this game!

Have you tried Baldur's Gate 3? I hear it's good...

    Re: 5700G vs 5700X Question

Interestingly I am playing Eve Online currently. Just at the end of my first month, have a mining barge on the go. It's a shame you need to upgrade to Omega to get the decent stuff but it was a decent offer at the time so have it for 3 months, will see how it goes. Has come a long way since I first played it 10 years or so ago. Saying that I play World of Warcraft as well, though haven't played since March, kind of go through phases of playing it. Though am I am playing WoW Classic which I have found to be more fun, even though far more time consuming but the rewards are earned unlike new WoW where you just need to walk into someone and epics drop.

I haven't given Baldurs Gate 3 a go yet though its on my list

    Re: 5700G vs 5700X Question

Dude, I played Eve Online in the beta and on and off (with about 5 years subbed) for perhaps (I don't recall) 6-8 years. The 1 year sub used to be only 600 mil isk lol. That guy got banned though but I didn't break the rules.

I used to be (eventually) in a corp called IRON and I seem to have around 51 Million SP.
