    Software Must-haves

So, I thought I would do a quick "bullet point" Blog with the software I suggest is installed on a system after a clean XP disk has been put in the drive

    - Windows XP /w Service Pack 2
    - Windows XP Updates
    - Drivers - with Updates (always latest)
    - Office XP /w Updates
    - LeechFTP
    - MSN (7) - Not Live.
    - Skype
    - Putty (SSH Client)
    - Firefox
    - NOD32
    - Network Printer Drivers

Whenever doing a clean install - above is always done

I will install all of above - then join the local Domain - and setup Outlook.

If it's a PC for my Office/Home use - I will put a map on each PC to a network drive, and move the My Documents to a relevant NAS setup.

Background will be set to Black, and all the Windows XP "gumpft" will be turned off - I like Windows Classic style.

    After that Photoshop goes on

What do you install on your PC?

See, thats the downside to Windows XP....

Before you even start using it, it takes a good few hours to install/patch/update etc

Be interesting to see how Vista changes things.

I like the fact I can decide what *I* run - I am not anti OSX - but it's a case of having to hunt for things if you want to do something "off the wall"

I forgot to add - I often Ghost the system install prior to joining the network incase something goes wrong

    Basic Debian system.
    GNOME.
    nVidia drivers.
    Totem, Realplayer, FFmpeg, etc.
    UT2004.
    Sylpheed Claws.
    SeaMonkey/Firefox.
    GAIM.
    gFTP.
    GNOME Office, OpenOffice.org.

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. If I'm doing Windows 2000, the list is easier:

    Windows 2000 + SP4 + Rollup + other patches.
    Drivers.
    Firefox.
    Games.

thats what nlite and slipstreaming is for, automate half the crap and only install a few updates after

musn't forget foobar on any install, also winscp, but i tend to carry winscp and putty around on an external drive, so it isn't really *that* critical
