Hi,
My old Viewsonic Optiquest 24" is on its last legs, flashing backlight etc and so I am in need of a new Monitor that will last me the next 5 - 8 years and I am looking at a Dell U2713HM.
Does anyone here use one?
Thanks

Did you go direct with Dell for the RMA? Did you buy direct from Dell? I was thinking of buying from Scan but i'm not 100% sure on it at the moment.

Personally, if I was going to buy one, I'd be making sure I got it from somewhere that promised to replace it if any pixel issues crop up:

That's where I got my U2212 monitors from.

I have one too, bought with the Quidco offer Snootyjim highlighted. Mine's definitely got some backlight bleed, but it's not as bad as other people's I've seen. It's only really an issue if you tend to watch films in a darkened room, as the bleeding is most apparent in such circumstances. In daylight or normal illumination, it's fine.
Dell do have their 'Premium Panel Guarantee':
http://www.dell.com/Learn/us/en/19/c...=us&l=en&s=dhs
The guarantee only seems to apply to monitors sold directly from Dell, however. Also, the guarantee is against 'bright pixels', so presumably 'dead pixels' aren't covered.
I know Aria offer a 'dead pixel check' with the monitors they sell, but it costs an extra £20 I believe. Which may mean if course, if you don't stump up for the check, that you have a higher chance of getting one with defective pixels.
I've got one, love it Blacklight bleed isn't noticeable in use for me.
I was looking at PCBuyit as well. I'll have a think about it a bit more, its quite a bit of cash but I thought that about my last 24" years ago and its done me well.

I got one, and returned it - couldnt be bothered with the back and forth between departments on Dell customer service to try another. I am missing a monitor that size and have been looking to see if they have sorted out the backlight bleed with later revisions or anything. Havent found anything concrete. Thinking of swapping my 5850 CF for a single 7970 so would love a 2560x1440 monitor to use with it. Wish I wasnt so picky back then.
I got one a few weeks ago, It was still the A0 revision which is known for the backlight bleed but I got lucky no bleeding, great monitor.
If the fonts in this resolution are too small for your eyes to see, you may want to consider to change the dpi settings to 125% or above.
However-beware!
It leads to many issues. For example, some programs do not support dpi scaling, so you would have to disable it in the compatibility tab or otherwise either they seem too blurry and unsharp or their fonts are just too small.
Once, I wasn't even able to uncheck the dpi scaling options, so I had to get a program that creates a shortcut just so I could do this.
Another time, I even had a problem with firefox. When I tried to watch a Youtube video in full screen, the taskbar hid the bottom part of it. So I had to disable dpi scaling and install an AutoZoom addon.
In conclusion, these dpi settings complicate life a bit , especially during the first days following the purchase of this monitor.
Another problem is your gpu. Your hd4890 will not be able to cope with this monstrous resolution..
Even with a GTX 660, which is much stronger, you would have to disable filters so games would run decently.
Therefore, if you need the work area and/or have a powerful video card that can handle gaming at this resolution and also have the money and willingness to spend time on troubleshooting issues in softwares, you should go for it.
If this is not the case, you had better grab a normal 1080P screen and save the headache of modying the compatibility settings in applications and changing graphics settings in games.
Other than that, the u2713hm monitor is great. It is very sharp and the colors are very vivid.
It has no perfect blacks, but changing to the 'movie' preset improves the situation.
Regarding the bleeding issue, I have the A0 revision and haven't paid attention to this issue so either it doesn't exist or it is barely noticable.
The dell window display manager allows you to set specific presets to specific applications. However, it completely overrides the default windows behavior so you would not be able to put windows side by side without choosing this partition option there, you will not be able to minimize other windows by shaking an active one or even maximize a window by dragging him to the top of the screen.
This is the reason why I erased this program.
