    Screen tearing?

Sometimes when I am playing games I get a thin section across my screen where it doesn't match up properly is this screen tearing and what could be causing it and how can it be solved it generally doesn't happen when I use vsync or stay windowed which I dont like doing.

I always play with vsync on, never get a problem with it then, try it and see if it makes a difference to your game.

    Re: Screen tearing?

I get small amount of tearing without vsync but put up for it due to the massive performance gains from turning it off

    Re: Screen tearing?

Never understood it really, I know playing a 2 million fps is probably good, as your eye can't detect anything above 30fps I have never understood why you would want to, I would prefer vsync on and get no tearing imo.

    Fallacy.

Or at least, it's not just about what the eye can detect, but other factors too, like latency.

Oh I don't care about running at 10000000fps but VSYNC quite often makes the difference of me being able to run at Ultra instead of High when @ 2550x1440... and a small amount of tearing I don't usually notice for a shinyness improvement I'm all for!

Indirectly in his case - if use of VSYNC drops the fps to below acceptable levels resulting in a need to lower settings then there is a difference in quality.

    Re: Screen tearing?

Why would vsync drop the fps though? I thought both AMD and Nvidia sorted that out a long time in driver updates. Nvidia's adaptive vsync for example?

Because it has to go to the nearest divider of the monitor refresh rate. If you have a monitor refresh rate of 60hz, but your graphics card can only render a scene at the equivalent of 59fps, then without vsync your FPS is 59, with vsync it could be 30fps (or alternating between 30 and 60, creating 45). Adaptive vysnc is the same as turning off vsync in that case - ie, no protection from tearing, so no benefit.

    Re: Screen tearing?

nvidia have adaptive vsync, AFAIK AMD don't have an equivalent, so on AMD cards drop below 60fps and you're immediately limited to 30fps. I'd be happy with that, but I know a lot of people aren't...
