Ultrawide 21:9 1440p Monitors

I stumbled across these in a couple of reviews and sites... and i really really want one.

As good as 4k might be, it will take a lot of GPU grunt to use and will probably remain expensive for the high quality panels for quite some time.

I actually have one of the 21:9 1080p monitors and its awesome for gaming or films (that are in this aspect). Its good for productivity but unless you get a special deal (like i did), i would say spend the extra money and go 1440p. With this monitor, you get the best of both worlds.

What are peoples thoughts?

My thoughts? I really want one too... but the cost... when I did a cursory search I saw €900, 7x the cost of my IPS 1080p is quite some dosh to throw down... that said, many people are happy to put that much to a TV

The idea of a 21:9 monitor does appeal to me, since I mainly watch stuff/play games on my PC, but I'd want to try one before parting with my current U27. Same applies to a 120hz monitor really, tried on in the past and really liked it, but would want to have another go, over the course of a couple of days to use it in a wider range of scenarios to see if the trade-offs are worth it.

Personally, I don't see the point over 4K, when that will be a more useful ratio and have more pixels on both directions.

For me the appeal would be multiple windows, a lot of stuff that I use does not look right when tiled on 16:9, i think the general shape just suits multiple windows better (at least for what I do).
Also I reckon you'd effectively get more gaming immersion for fewer pixels with one of these, even with a 22" 1080p I don't feel like the monitor is lacking height, I do feel like my peripheral vision is being left out though, so this would solve those problems for me.

Now we just need Hexus to get one of these in as a competition prize...

My thoughts exactly. For what i do work wise, this is perfect.
The problem with 4k will be that in Windows, the scaling is piss poor and it will take a long time for all applications to correctly scale. If you run at native resolution with no DPI scaling on anything less than 32"-40" its going to be unpleasant. You will also be probably stuck with TN technology for a long time, unless you want to fork out a couple of grand.

I looked at wide screen monitors and thought no, they're not for me. But now I think differently. It's a little out of my budget, but depending on how the ROG Swift 28" looks in reviews, I think it might be worth adding it to my shortlist and then saving up a bit more to go for this instead.

The only reason I went for the U27 over a 21:9 was all the Ultrawides where only 1080p. At 1440p I want this however I've made my purchase so I'll stick to it

Would love the extra vertical real estate over my Dell 24" monitors (1920x1200). I really don't think Windows is ready for 4K, perhaps W9 will deal with it better. And 4K screens are too rich for me, especially the decent ones.

I have a 21:9 monitor at the moment (2560 x 1080) and honestly, it's a little bit of a ballache. Great when things fit correctly but I've encountered a few games that don't know what to do with the resolution. Battlefield 4, for example, works fine in game but cuts off bits of the menus sometimes. That kind of thing is quite common. I also find the extra wide size to be awkward when UI elements, icons etc are way on one side of the screen, but that may be just a personal preference.

It is however brilliant for multiple windows. I could see this being a plus for productivity, much like a second monitor.

Its a shame that these are looking like they will be almost double the price of existing 1440p monitors

I guess the high price is it due being such a niche format... im still very tempted.

I guess on the other hand Overclockers are renowned for being expensive on the pre-order front, if they come in stock at scan/ebuyer etc i guess they might be £100 less which makes them a bit more plausible.

I really want an ultrawide but don't need 4k. I already find 2560x1600 on a 30" screen to be way more than enough, plus the cost of gfx cards is already expensive at this resolution.

Once there are a selection of curved ultrawides with a choice of resolutions, then I will start to seriously look.

Certainly in Win 7, it makes it realtively easy to arrange three screens side by side. Doing that with a single wide panel would take a lot of messing...
