Question 27" monitor purchase and 144Hz/Freesync/Nvidia question.

    Hello,

Looking to buy a 27” 1440p monitor <£400 for general purpose home use to team up with a GTX 980 (maybe Ti) and my choice seems to be a 60Hz..ish IPS or 144Hz TN panel.
The Ben-Q GW2765HT and Acer XG270HU are on my short list.

I realise this may be a dumb question but will a Freesync monitor be able to run at 144Hz with an Nvidia card i.e. without using the Freesync technology?
Or in order for them to run at 144Hz do the Freesync tech enabled monitors require an ATI card and G-Sync monitors need an Nvidia card?

It’s just that there seems to be a >£200 premium on G-Sync IPS panels and I’m finding it difficult to justify to myself, spending that much more money.
I might just be able to talk myself into spending Freesync money though.

    Cheers,
    Gary

    Nvidia card = G-sync only
    AMD card = Freesync only

For the time being, at least. It's possible that Nvidia will adopt Freesync at some point, but don't hold your breath...

Re: 27" monitor purchase and 144Hz/Freesync/Nvidia question.

Thanks for the reply MrJim, sorry to be a pain but could you please clarify that that means the monitors will only run at 144Hz using their respective G-Sync/Freesync tecnologies?
There's no such thing as a 144Hz non G-Sync/Freesync monitor?
I probably need to read up more on the subject.

    Thanks.

Re: 27" monitor purchase and 144Hz/Freesync/Nvidia question.

I believe they will run at 144Hz regardless of which variable sync technology they support - you just won't get the variable refresh rate unless you use the corresponding graphics card. I've certainly seen 120Hz non G-sync or Freesync monitors, I'm not sure about 144Hz though.

Fixed 144Hz monitors were around before Gsync and Freesync, so you should be fine driving it as a fast but fixed rate monitor.

Thanks for the info Mr Jim and thanks for your help again DanceswithUnix. :-)
I think I’ve managed to talk myself down to getting the 60Hz Ben-Q GW2765HT and I’ll wait till there’s more choice of G-Sync monitors before forking out serious wedge.

    Cheers.
