I was just wondering if this is actually viable as it looks like the TV manufacturers are ramming 4k down our throats like they did with 3d.

This was something I looked at a few weeks back.
It boiled down to a few things:
a) Generally, the cheap 4K TVs that are being released are purely just that, a TV. They won't surpass 24/30FPS.
b) Colours and backlight bleed etc are all terrible.
c) How close are you sitting to it? Will you be struggling to use the entire screen without moving your head too much?
d) This may be the most important point: Can you graphics card comfortably run everything you would do on it? Games become much more demanding on a graphics card when they're asked to render over 8 million pixels.
I'm sure I've seen a few 4k tvs with hdmi 2.0 that were around 400-500 pound. However as hoonigan has mentioned 4k is difficult to run at. Even my 970 struggles a 1440p here and there.
