Single 970 Gaming monitor advice please. - omg things have changed

    Hi all,
Over this year I've saved up and built a new rig after 6 years using my old 920!!!! Things have changed a lot with monitors and my head is spinning.
My new rig is an i7-6700k on a gigabyte gaming 7 with a single 970gfx card. Running it at 4.4ghz with cpu temp topping out at 71degrees so may be a bit more juice in it yet.
My current monitor is a 3D 22inch syncmaster at 120hz @ 1680x1050. I'm really not fussed with getting a new 3D panel but the fast refresh has been great - I just want to go bigger and have a good refresh rate a bit better resolution and keep a single gfx card if possible.
I presume in my case a jump to 4K is not really worth it?
    I'm budgeting £400-£500max.
    Any advice very greatly recieved.
    Thanks in advance
    PZ
Ps edit - gaming habits are realism fps shooters such as Red Orchestra and combat flight sims and then strategy civ v etc.

Ok so I'm looking at this
AOC G2460PG 24" 144Hz Full HD G SYNC LED Gaming Monitor
    LN58105
Is there one up from this at 27"+ that will still be easy for one card to drive ?

Forget 4k, that is years away and current 4k monitors are pretty poor for gaming on. FPS will also be awful even with the best GPU you can buy.

I've tried a few monitors (inc 27" 1440) and found the best for the money are the large curved panels. They are only 1080, but for gaming I found it's perfectly fine and even a 970 will drive it easily. AOC do a good one which you can find for under £450 now. Once you experience the excellent colours, contrast, and smoothness of the VA panel you won't care or notice the slightly less sharp image after a while.

I didn't find G-sync worth the money at all. On 60hz monitors where you normally get a lot of tearing it's good. But on a high response, 144hz monitor you really struggle to see the difference. What it does NOT do is make sub 40fps smooth or eliminate mouse lag. Having used it for a year, it's not magic like Nvidia would have people believe.
