Monitor response time: 1mS vs 4mS

For a gaming monitor, would there be much a real-life difference in a monitor having a response time of 1mS vs 4mS? I'm looking for a monitor for flight-sim games.

The 4mS response time monitors are generally a lot cheaper, and budget is a constraint for me, but if 1mS is definitely one to go for then I will.

Re: Monitor response time: 1mS vs 4mS

The manufacturer stated response time is pretty much meaningless, as manufacturers typically implement a super aggressive response time mode in the settings just to be able to claim the stated response time on the box. You would never use this mode in practise, as it ALWAYS results in excessive inverse ghosting (where there's a white halo style effect near moving objects on screen), which is magnitudes worse than a bit of blurring from a slow response time. Also they only have to hit 1ms in some portion of the transition spectrum to (i.e. white > black transition) which is typically easier and faster to do than switching between say mid-blue to mid-green, which will elicit a lower response than the "adverised" 1ms, even if white to black transtions hit 1ms with the same monitor settings.

I'd highly recommend you watch this, and check out Hardware Unboxed's extensive review method for monitors:

Re: Monitor response time: 1mS vs 4mS

Just to add as well: 4ms is the equivalent to 250 frames per second. Even if the figures were accurate and fair, IMHO the difference would be meaningless. Last time I bought a screen, I checked reviews on https://www.rtings.com/ first.

Re: Monitor response time: 1mS vs 4mS

I had the Odyssey just recently. Refresh rate unreal, response awesome but the screen flickers and I am not the only one to complain about it. Returned mine. You don't have spend a lot eiother as you can get the LG the GN version. Good price and a screen. Looked at a lot of reviews on them.

I have the Dell S2721DGF (in the list above), and I think it's a solid option. Nano IPS, 1440p, IPS, 165Hz....

Re: Monitor response time: 1mS vs 4mS

I have a Gigabyte G27Q - I'm extremely happy with it. Refresh rate/Freesync/Gsync is noticeable in the huge improvement in smoothness and the HDR colours are definitely an improvement. However I would be - It's replaced a 12 Year old E-IPS screen.
