There's not a single player floating about anywhere is there? The multi is ok, but it gets repetitive.

I know what you mean Chuckskull but to the best of my knowledge there is no single player yet.

Beta is now closed, good fun while it lasted

I've heard that there is a demo coming but can't tell you if it's SP or MP.

Re: World in Conflict Open Beta

I dont think I'll be buying it, unless they weave some magic on it between now and release.

I played it for about 8 days straight. Every evening for probably 6 hours each evening. For the first 6 evenings or so, I absolutely LOVED it. But for the last couple of days, I got bored to tears of it. It was partly because of the lack of teamplay from the players (as mentioned earlier), but the game itself is quite shallow really. I think if you are used to playing RTS's, you will likely get tired of this game pretty fast. Its just an action game, and it plays more like Counterstrike or something, than a RTS. If you enjoy the depth of a big RTS, with tons of units, and flanking your enemies, and building strong lines of defence etc... then I think you will probably dislike this game as much as I did.

Theres just nothing there.. Theres only about half a dozen main units in the entire time, and at any one time, you can only control one (or at the most, a few). Being able to switch roles on the fly was good, because it effectively means you can use any of the units, but they aren't there all the time. You only ever have one batch, so if you have a bunch of heavy choppers, and they get taken out, then you have nothing left... If you want to go in with a bunch of tanks, then you have to wait for your credits to build up, and then you have to order the tanks and wait for them to arrive, and then you start from the back.. Unlike an RTS where you control the entire battlefield and if your choppers die, YOU can then bring in something in their place etc. Although more importantly... YOU can actually support the choppers properly in the first place, unlike this game where you have to follow the herd.

This feels like I am playing Company of Heroes, C&C, or Supreme Commander, but I am only allowed to control one group of units.... and all the others are controlled by other real people, so you are relying on them not being complete spazzes, or you are pretty much screwed. And even if they are a good team player, its still not that great an experience because you are still only controlling one little group of units.

It also forces you to play as a team. So you can't go off on your own with a squadron of tanks, to "blow stuff up". Because you will just get wiped out by a bunch of choppers. So you have to play as a team, and I found that to be really boring. To play the game "properly", the entire team has to move together as one big squadron. So you are only as fast as your slowest member. So while the crappy little infantry blokes are loading into vehicles, and while the tanks are lining up getting ready to move, and the long range artillery is coming to meet you etc... you are sitting there like a lemon with your choppers, waiting for everyone to be ready. Then when you set off.. you can't go anywhere and do anything - you have to stick with the group because you need them, and they need you. I just find that to be slow and ponderous and boring.

The game demands team work, and it also demands that you play it for a while and figure out how to play well. And to me, that doesn't work because the game lacks the depth to justify spending any real amount of time playing it... If I was going to devote my free time to playing with a clan of real people, making friends, learning strategies and learning to play as a team etc... I would rather do that in a different game. I wouldn't want to do all that, only to find that we had completely mastered everything there is to know, within about 2 weeks. And then the next few months are just game after game which are all pretty much identical.

Perhaps I was spoilt by games like EverQuest or something.. but something like that, involves a learning process which lasted a year or more. So atleast making a time and effort investment in that game, rewarded you with some long term gameplay.

Not sure if that makes sence or not, but there ya go.

Interesting game. Very close to being awesome. Loved it for a week. But then its lack of depth became really apparent and it all fell apart

I bet it will be a huge hit... because they will release a demo, and people will play the demo for a few days and think its amazing.. and then buy the full game. And then a month later, they will wish they didn't. Thats what I think will happen anyway. I may be wrong. I would have to actually play it for a full month to know for sure, but I won't do that. I'll be playing something else instead

lol Im trying to think of ANY game that if I played 6 hours a day every day I wouldnt get bored. Particularly a game where it was only an unfinished beta with no single player and only one map

Re: World in Conflict Open Beta

I acknowledged the fact that it was unfinished, so I'm judging it on what I saw. I've seen enough Beta's to know that some change massively and some are released in the exact same state as the beta. Also, there where 2 maps or 3 if you pre-ordered. Not one.

Also, it may have been 6 hours, but it was only for a week... and it wasn't always 6 hours every night, some nights I played it for maybe half an hour. So in total, it was more like 35 hours or so, in total. So thats not a good sign at all.

Prior to WiC, the last beta I was in, was Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. That lasted about 500 times longer than World in Conflict. I could play that for about 6 hours a day too, but for 2 months! before I started getting bored.

Then think about games like C&C. Fans of those games can play them for months and even years.

Re: World in Conflict Open Beta

The single player demo will be released on Monday the 20th of August and is rumored to contain many goodies (Single player levels, potentially multi-player levels as well but possibly only LAN).

This came out on the WiC official site forums last week, was let slip by a developer at interview.

I for one think its an awesome game, my workmate and I played it quite a bit and were very sad to see the beta close. The graphics quality, especially the environment, is astounding!
