Nah - it blows goats m8, mostly the gunnery lets it down, ie complete absence of shell flight time or leading a moving target - completely ruins it.

Sad fact of the matter is that currently there isn't one, unless you look at Bf 1942 / Flashpoint add-ons which are more game than simulation.

Believe you me chaps, there ain't no-one crying out for a decent WW2 Tank sim more than me, and theres so far nada on the horizon

    shocking tbh.

If only Oleg Maddox and his boys were into tanks!

I'm pretty sure that would be a sim worth getting

speaking of BF1942 addons , speak to Vimeous - he is part of the battlegroup '42 team.

It was started by an ex tank regiment chappie who found a lot of inaccuracies in the way BF1942 did its tank bit

have a look at their site or chat to Vimeous.

If you want a modern, accurate tank sim but with crap graphics - Steel Beasts.
Hopefully Steel Beasts II should be out shortly with much improved graphics.

    Nah! Checked this out.

Modern doesn't interest me, or the historically obsessed friend I'm present hunting for

Tiger tanks for me I'm afraid.

Best tank sim ever ? Panzer Front on the PS1. Graphics look hilariously dated now but I kid you not this was the best game on the PS1 (for me and many others anyway) You could drive literally any tank from WW2 and after playing all the stock scenarios you could use the mission editor to change the tanks to your choice

ie - fed up of getting wasted in your Panzer 4 ? Here - have a King Tiger instead

Nothing I've seen on the PC comes close to Panzer Front, it really did educate you on tank warfare, tactics, ballistics and armour. Real life tank gunners couldn't believe how well it simulated gunnery, and the cut-scene of your enemy target brewing up as your shell slammed into him was probably the most satisfying 'kill' in a simulator ever - it never got boring.

I'm still amazed there is nothing around on the PC, frankly its such a waste of the processing power and graphics capabilities on modern machines

    OPERATION FLASHPOINT!

Although the game can be buggy at times and the graphics are starting to look a bit dated, but with the GFX turned up and the expansion it looks good.

I have to agree there. I had some great times playing this with my housemate on the PS 1, taking turns to be driver and gunner.

Yes - we need something that utilises modern PC graphics.

Have you considered world war 2 online. it's multiplay only and tehre's a monthly fee but it does simulate a range of tanks very well and you have a huge range of other vehicles to use as well. It's the closest I've found to wwii in a game and if tanks are you're thing you'd love it
