    Blu Ray game discs

When do you reckon we're going to start seeing pc games on blu ray as well as dvd. I know i'd prefer it if the game had more that one disc like GTA IV.

i know that most games still fit on DVD fine but when do you reckon they'll be used common place.

how many people do you know that has a blu-ray drive in their pc?
and now how many dvd drive?

blu-ray just costs way toooo much for what it does.

I'm not saying tommorow but surely this is the same as what happened with CD and DVD.

Slowly everything changed to be on DVD and i'm just wondering when you reckon we'll see the first blu ray game disc.

Or will it skip it completely and go onto downloads.

You can buy a Blu Ray drive for as little as £50. All the latest graphics cards and monitors are HDCP ready anyway. Well worth the money. Although, I suppose DVD movies are getting sooo cheap now.

But for gaming I don't see this happening for a very very very very very long time. You install the games straight to your hard drive anyway. So with GTA IV it wouldn't stream straight from the disc. So I bet you will see games coming on multiple DVDs instead. Same with 360 as that installs on to your HDD as well. I guess that gives your DVD drive a longer lfe.

    Re: Blu Ray game discs

I think the way things are going, downloads are a much more viable platform for developers. It's a lot cheaper than bluray, there are less problems with piracy/drm and there aren't really any requirements except a decent broadband connection (ie, no-one has to buy expensive bluray drives).

And I bet there's a lot more demand for high-speed internet (from people wanting movies and music over the net and cable services) than there is for bluray.

and i can get a dvd rewriter for under £15

the average joe isn't going to go and buy a blu-ray drive and install it themselves, hell i doubt they know they could even buy those things.

it would be the major pc manufacturers (dell etc) who would need to put them in every pc... and as we all know, they bump up the prices when they get to say that the pc they are selling has BLU-RAY!

you know they still release some games in cd format right?
now imagine if they had to do a cd+dvd+blu-ray release.. that would increase distribution costs..

there are loads of reasons why it won't happen in the near future.

    Re: Blu Ray game discs

The move from CD games to DVD games was so incredibly latent that using it as a precedent suggests to me we'll have Blu-Ray games around the time Blu-Ray gets superseded by something "bigger", "better" and with more DRM.

    Re: Blu Ray game discs

I don't see it being anytime soon as has been mentioned before. Console games don't normally install a game, they stream from the disc(some files on new consoles are installed but most of the game is streamed).
PC games are compressed on the disc and then installed and expanded on your hard drive, so there is no need for larger discs at the moment.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

    Re: Blu Ray game discs

I'm going to say never as well.
If it wasn't for ever increasing internet speeds I would say that most games would be available on Blu-ray as well as DVD for the PC by 2013.
I know lots of whiners will moan about the current unsuitable state of British broadband but from a commercial point of view the costs of pressing Blu-ray discs will probably be too high to cater for the minority that have sub 2 Mbit broadband connections.
I predict that by 2013, publishers will have worked out a suitable way to stream games to PC's so after a delay of say 10 minutes where the first 5% of a game is downloaded you can start playing whilst the download continues in the background. If it's a multiplayer, a bit of QoS to make sure the download doesn't get in the way of the game experience and everybody's happy.
Unless they are fast at completing things and have to wait 15 mins for level 2 to download of course.

    Re: Blu Ray game discs

Blueray isnt bad it means you can watch films on your pc that doesnt look bad when you scale it full screen.

For high quality films blueray discs with their massive 50GB capacity are needed. But for files and games its hardly worth cutting a huge hole in your market so that you can put the whole game on one disc.
