Really looking forward to some good old fashioned fraging!

The new UT engine isn't impressive at all. It's using all the same features as the previous one and two 'new' features. The reason why it looks so nice is because of the artists creating good looking characters. You have to remember the actual looks of a game is down to processing power and the creation (i.e. the art) it's got nothing to do with the engine. The only reason it's looking nice now is 'cause they're actually fully utlizing the power of the latest graphics cards. At the time they were using 6800's hence why

    Kezzer take a look here:
    http://media.pc.ign.com/media/670/670283/imgs_1.html

Granted it uses the new graphics cards but either way...
For those who cant be bothered to click the link (Sorry 56k'ers)

Thats a 5720 Polygon Character that only about 1500 more than whats being used in games at the mo.
That is an in game screen shot!

It's sourced from a 2 million polygon character, good artist or not the level of detail that can be got from a 2 million poly model is amazing.
It's worth noting that its a Directx 9 excusive, not a hardware thing.
    Theres more about it here:

It's designed for Directx 9.0, but requires an absolute minimum of Pixel Shader 2.0.
If you have a Pixel Shader 3 card it will run fine.
Unreal Engine 3.0 (which is what this is) is designed to run on a Geforce 6800 and only on a Nvidia card, ATI hasnt as yet started to use the technology that it uses. But if you consider how many games are made with the Unreal Engine they might decide to change there minds.
So you are right on that point, except I should imagine that it will run on a lower system but the graphics will just look the same as the do in UT 2004 after all to make a game engine that only works on new cards will be a case of shooting themsleves in the foot.
It is worth noting as well that to get the absolute best out of Doom 3 that you also need Pixel Shader 2.0 (6800 or x800xt)

    Doom 3 Worry Free Specifications

3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 64 3000+.
    1 gigabyte of memory.
Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
An nVidia 6800 graphics card or an ATI X800XT
    6.1 surround sound audio

So it's not all that different really.

It depends, they've already built most of the engine so implementing new features from DirectX would just put them behind schedule because they would then have to make sure that they are utilized within the game itself. This means there's a big chain of development. They'll most probably make use of the processing power of the new generation of GPU's and use all the features out of DirectX 9.0.

Mainly from that screenshot, it's just a high polygon count on the character whilst using some features which are available to them with the current technology and a very good artist spending a lot of time on it

I've seen the video for the Unreal 3 engine, it looks incredible on how they're making everything in the game use every feature possible, it really enhances gameplay.

yeah, and how long did it take to get dx9 out of the door?

Unreal 3 will be out well before dx10 eventually surfaces.. (They've not even finalised the spec yet, so how can they possibly develop to it?)
