    9800Pro pap for Doom3?

I have just bought a hercules 9800Pro so that I would be able to play Doom3 and mainly HL2 in all their spankin glory, but from what I have been reading the ATI is going to be pap for Doom3 is this true? Am I gonna have to spend another £300 in 6 months times when Doom3 comes out just so I can play that as well?

Well if ur hinting an Nvidia card it will probably be £600 with the current state of their prices for the top end cards.

I think it's more marketing malarky, the 9800pro runs that dawn demo better than the 5900ultra and it was supposed to be "impossible" to run on anything other than the top of the line nVidia hardware..

If it is pants, just wait for the inevitable patch (official or unofficial) and everything will be alright in the world

I seriously doubt carmack would destroy half a market by only having nvidia. Just run with it for the time being, Imo carmack is a far better coder than valve from previous works (abeit all opengl/glide though not directx) and has been working with the companies since early GF4/8500 days.
I dont like sig pics so i turn off sigs Which doesnt help when i dont know what ive written here! DOH!

Theres been early bench stuff done on HL2 recently at Anandtech I believe (news story covered at Guru3D) and the Radeon based cards are running it way better than the FX cards. The 9600 Pro card with Catalyst 3.6 is apparently out performing the FX 5900 cards on it. Going to be interesting to see when they both finally hit the shelves.

You are right with N-Vidia and the OpenGl stuff though. Look at the Quake series. The OpenGL looks amazing on it (Mind you, so does Unreal Tourny if the engine will support GL on you're card !)

If they made Doom3 to specifically run on the N-Vidia cards then it will be their loss as alot of people including myself have moved from N-Vidia over to ATI platforms mainly due to price / performance ratio and not forgetting the much better driver support now.

I guess at the min the hype for both these games is virtually going to everyones heads. If you have a decent processor, plenty of ram and a mid to top end graphics board then you should be able to run both these games pretty well. Me personally looking at Doom 3 I'm not to sure in all honesty if anything that is available at the present is going to run it as the programmers intend. The visuals kinda look like Battle Of Proxycon on 3DMark 03 I feel and that doesn't run overly well on some of the lower end cards and non DX9 cards.

Going to be interesting to see exactly what the developers can do with this as alot of people will be real annoyed if the current hardware doesn't run these 2 games to well.

A Rad9800Pro still owns the Future Proof market.....it represents the best card for the dough over a period of 8 months to a year.

SO dont fret it mate.......you stick with it, safe in the knowledge that you can run IL2 at 1024x768x32 with all the AA and AF set t max and smile like a dog with a big bone

Then....WHEN Doom3 and HL2 turn up, we'll fret about it then.....I dont think its a case of whether its PAP at DoomIII , just that it wont support 1600x1200x32 with all the candy on.

i would say its the best card to get, still. nvidia basicly sucks at dx9, and although i doubt it is as good as ppl say in opengl, this would simply be for the reson opengl is a LOT less complicated and programmable functions (ps/vs stuff in dx8/9) is not standeardised yet in ogl, each manufacturer uses there own extensions which could mean ati have less optimised/driver problem with OGL, or even nvidia might be cheating AGAIN! also looking thru the d3 leaked config, there is options for standard opengl, nv2x opengl and nv30 opengl, looks like ID are optimising it for the gf fx cards just from this.....

ATI have claimed all the cards 9500+ will ALL support OGL1.5, and very possibly OGL2 (this being the version to standardise the programable functions). any one know if nvidia has similar claims?

any benchmarks u have showing 5900u and 9800p in doom3 give me link please!

i dont know how many ppl this has affected but doom3 alpha LEAKED version wont even run on a lot of 5900u cards, not sure why, but ppl were able to run it fine before with different cards.

on my crappy set up i get around 50fps and thats with my cpu 200mhz less and gfx not overlocked, this is what i got now:

    XP1700+ @ 2.2ghz, 512mb pc3200, nf7-s r1.1, 9700np
    overclocked to 370/313 (stock 276/270).

also watercooling my rig VERY soon so i wont have any problems running it. (btw that was using the default leaked d3 config, i know fps can be improved a lot by just changing a few lines but i cba)
