Valve done this of their own accord, Sierra knew nothing about it till last minute. Had a conversation with someone at Sierra when i purchased HL2 about not having a net connection at the time and not being happy about the way valve had done it and was told that valve would not be releasing anything else via Sierra.

Guy at Sierra was great, even offered a full refund on the game if I wasnt getting the net installed, very helpful and pleasant to talk to.

Personally I will not buy anymore valve games at all regardless of what they are (next big thing or not) but will continue to purchase games from Sierra

I got the HL2 voucher with the purchase of my 9800XT. Looked forward to playing it. It took so long to release that I lost interest. Then my son mentioned that the d'load was only working for users in the US. I have further lost interest in this game to the point that it just leaves me cold. I have heard so much negative press from all sides about this company that I won't be buying their product or any of their upcoming products.

There are many other excellent games to play from much more customer friendly companies whom I would much rather deal with. Can't see me missing HL2.

I think that HL2 being the superb game it is, perhaps one of the best for 5 years; has been overshadowed by a terrible way of going about letting the user install and actually play the game. It took me at least an hour to install and Decrypt HL2, this was on the 2nd copy I might add, because the first copy I bought had a cd key half of which hadnt even been printed properly on the label so I was unable to play at all...

Silly Valve, they are letting down so many people, and not just letting them play the brilliant game they have created as quickly and easily as possible.

TBH I do think £10 is cheeky to transfer the license over but I can see why Valve have done the whole Steam thing. Traditionally games developers have been shafted by the publisher so I can see why they're pushing everyone to use steam even if they bought the game in a shop. Hopefully, one day, games sold for direct download will be significantly cheaper than the shop price - no publisher markup, no retailer markup, no box, disc or manual, etc... Though it would probably have to be an on-line exclusive as otherwise any publisher would be more than a bit miffed about being undercut.

Naah, can't be bothered. Got plenty to keep me occupied for the forseeable future. Rome TW now playing as one of the other factions. Vampire bloodlines, I'm kinda liking that one. And I can always go to CoD if I want a good FPS. Just to mention a few.

No it's not, if you read the EULA (The one you agree to when installing the game and is also available to read prior to purchasing) resale is not allowed.

I've wondered about that before, as nowadays even large stores such as Game have second-hand sections.

A very interesting point, but this is a most odd situation. I know plenty of shops that sell second hand PC games and ebay etc allow it (they wound not if it was illegal). How can a company say that you can not resell your property. Also, that agreement is not displayed until you open the box and begin installing - so what would happen if someone decided that after reading that agreement at that point decided that they did not want to proceed and and sell it? its technically second hand by this point.

Exact same camp as RVF here, I was considering shelling out for this title, I'm not a big fan of FPS games, but was going to mke an exception here.

    I don't think I'll bother now.

RVF - look out for 'Brothers in Arms' soon, I have a feeling you might like it

ebays' policies are screwy. they remove all auctions for home-burnt linux distributions, for example

How can a company say that you can not resell your property.
you can sell your property - the physical media. it's not much use without the license though, which isn't your property, it's an agreement between you & them. same applies for reselling OEM copies of windows - you can sell the disc, but the license is non-transferrable

Also, that agreement is not displayed until you open the box and begin installing - so what would happen if someone decided that after reading that agreement at that point decided that they did not want to proceed and and sell it? its technically second hand by this point.
yes, it is, which is why you return it to the shop for a refund at that point.

people pirate because they're cheapskates. the amiga, for example, was killed off by piracy, and there was no internet based activation or anything back then, at worst you needed a photocopied manual.
