Re: Do you have any interest in VR?
I got this cable, works absolutely fine: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08FY28Z8F/ plugged in to the front Type C 3.1 port
I found opting in to the beta channel on the oculus desktop software enabled 90hz for me when tethered via Oculus Link, doesn't make much difference, but you can just about tell if you look for it. I was expecting the linked streaming to be worse, but Steam picks it up seamlessly and there's nothing you really have to do other than enable it on the headset.
My router is a fairly old 5ghz job and doesn't seem to be the best for wireless streaming, but it worked briefly in virtual desktop. Yet to try a game. Spent more time trying to set up a wifi 6 hotspot on my PC, which I could but it never had an internet connection - guess it's something to do with VPN.
Been playing pistolwhip, beat saber, don't touch anything and Superhot on the device. Running through Obduction (Myst style game) on Steam and going to try out Alyx after that.

When VR works like a holodeck on Star Trek, it'll be perfect!

Thanks for the link, usb cables are always handy so I might try one.
My 4m A to C USB cable works on the PC downstairs just fine. I tried Beat Sabre and Alyx and they both worked really well. That is the room that currently has my Rift, and as a bonus I think it was using my wall mounted Rift cameras to help track the Quest hand controllers.
I now have a USB 3.1 card with one A and one C port on it, so I can see if that works any better than my motherboard controller.
Re: Do you have any interest in VR?
My daughter got a Vive Galaxy for Christmas and compared to the Oculus its a vast improvement, no stupid sensors having to be set up, tracking works, setup was a bit clunky, the software as it crashed but think they use Steam VR for all that anyway. Quality was very very good and above all the headset fitted the head better without feeling like its crushing your nose or pulling back on your head.
Re: Do you have any interest in VR?
The two things that puts me off from getting one is the price and the motion sickness it gives me when i used one in a store a while ago.
Re: Do you have any interest in VR?
I bought the original Rift when it was released, and really enjoyed it. I kept it for a couple of years, but I ended up selling it as had a spell of playing several games which were non-VR (GTA5, amongst others).
Just starting to get the itch again now though as FS2020 has just had VR support added, and I also bought Star Wars: Squadrons, which is meant to be awesome in VR.
I wouldn't entertain the current Vive, the new HP headset or the Index. They're just too expensive. So I was about to buy a Quest 2, but from what I can gather the cable link can be a bit temperamental. I've seen threads on reddit where one guy says it works perfectly for him, but then several others say it works for a couple of minutes, but then they have to reboot several times, reconnect the cable, do the voodoo chicken dance and then it *might* start working again.
The reviewer of SW: Squadrons in Custom PC also mentioned that he suffered issues with frame rate and tracking in this game when using the Quest with link. So for my requirements, I think a Rift S is going to be the best fit. If anyone's thinking of selling one, let me know :)

I've been using mine daily since Christmas day and the connection has been rock solid, not a single blip. For those having issues, it could be a cable or USB issue, I got a decent USB C 3.1 cable (linked above) and run on an X570 motherboard.

It seems to work really well when it works.
It works wonderfully on my PC downstairs, which is a Ryzen 3600 on an Asus B450m Gaming motherboard, but upstairs on my 3700X and Asus X470 Pro the same headset and the same cable refuse to work. Have swapped to a USB3.1 card which had Amazon users saying it worked for them, didn't help. The link is detected, but seems to reset as soon as you try and use it like the device has been unplugged and plugged back in again.
Interestingly the speed rating is only 2.2Gbps on the Oculus speed test, I get something like 2.8Gbps on the working port downstairs (which is a motherboard USB 3.1 port). I get a compatibility green light, just doesn't work. I might try a USB C to C cable, but that feels like clutching at straws.
I'm still glad I got this rather than a Rift-S, the ability to work stand alone is getting used a lot and I expect the Quest will get firmware updates and development for longer, but this isn't an easy ride so far. But then I get the impression the Link only just came out of beta?

Thanks both, useful to hear some real-world experiences :)

This is exactly what I've been seeing on Reddit. Like it works for a split-second and then stops again. On balance, as I already own quite a few Rift games, I'm gonna stick with buying a Rift S for now as I want to be sure of 100% compatibility. I know it's much longer in the tooth than the Quest 2, but it'll do me for now.

I hadn't realised this, just had a quick Google and yes it was only mid-September. Perhaps explains why it's still a bit glitchy for some people...

I'm starting to think this is a Windows/driver problem. If I had a spare SSD I would try a fresh Windows install to verify, but I don't want to wipe the machine just to get a headset working. That's just too tedious to get things back how I like them, even for someone that does all their real work in Linux. I only wanted to check out Elite in higher res VR, not convinced I would actually start playing the game again.
Note that if you bought games on the Oculus store then some of those may have Quest versions that you now automatically own and could run the freestanding version. Most of my games are on Steam, so I didn't have much of that. My daughter bought The Climb, a game which gives me the willies so I'm not playing that in the Quests's improved graphics it was scary enough on the Rift :D

I fell head over heals for Beatsaver on my Oculus Rift S, and honestly can't recommend it enough!
Beatsaver is also great for those worried about motion sickness as the player remains relatively static with non of those nauseating VR mind tricks, it works as a great introductory game... the challenge then is to not get hooked on what was supposed to just be an introduction to VR
Re: Do you have any interest in VR?
Might have to try Beatsaver, as my Rift S is arriving tomorrow :)
Hoping to see a reasonable jump in image quality compared to my old CV1 too.

Beatsaber is also great
I was a little disappointed in the resolution "improvement", it's there but not as huge a jump as I was hoping.
I've settled in to the Quest 2 now, been picking up the occasional "on offer" game in the oculus store, but they are typically hugely overpriced. Since my main use is tethered to the PC I'm happily trawling through my steam VR library. Here's some suggestions for stuff I've found to work well:
Gnog - a short and quirky puzzle game, fun for the couple of hours max you'll get from it.
Abode 2 - really good "room escape" style game, enjoyed it so much I've grabbed the first episode and also "Conductor" from the same company (Steam bundle) - not tried those yet
Google Earth VR - somehow managed to sink HOURS in to this just flying around visiting places I've lived or holiday'd, they have a neat setting to reduce motion sickness as well, which seems to work.
Still not had time to start Alyx, guess that'll be a weekend adventure

Depends what you consider perfect... if your thing is being around malfunctioning technology that traps you in a Sherlock Holmes novel and has 1930s gangsters gunning at you with the safety protocols disabled, while the Borg invade, then sure!!
Re: Do you have any interest in VR?
Whilst I have yet to join the VR realm, I was doing some research into the available options recently after pondering about using it with Microsoft Flight Simulator. Microsoft seemed to back the HP Reverb G2 as the first headset to be compatible with the game, which was the first I had heard of it, and the spec does some good in comparison to the HTC and Oculus options.
I'm new to the forum so can't post links yet, but if you Google "HP Reverb G2" and click the onto the official site there is a comparison table at the bottom - notably the eye resolution is much higher than the alternative headsets which I'm hoping will reduce any risk of eye strain, motion sickness etc when I do invest.
I'm pretty sure they were released in October in the U.S although have yet to see when we can pick one up from the UK store.

Hope you enjoy it! Definitely recommend getting yourself some custom maps downloaded too :)
Out of curiosity, has anyone here upgraded from the Rift S to the Quest 2? Would be great to hear your thoughts!
