    Virtual cd drive

right this is the closet i could find to do with games/computers.
basucally have a game - legit. as a iso image or summat and apparently to save having to burn it to a cd i can extract it to my hd and install it using a virtual cd drive program - does anyone know wjere i can find 1 of these? basically i think it tricks the computer into thinking the files are on a cd not the hd.

Google for it, it's a free download. I'd be interested to hear how you have an ISO of a legal game though... Best have a good excuse else the thread goes bye bye.

Why not contact the game publisher for a new CD?

I do the same with all my games disk....alcohol 120% > image on hdd > Mount game with deamon tools.

and before you say, all my games are legit....did this after my bf1942 and ut2k3 disk "cracked" in the center spindal.

Spent enuff on them to begin with and did not wana give another 10 quid a disk so just made images of them also means less chance of the cd getting nicked at a lan party which has happened to a few m8's recently....

    Apex

btw am not sure where the law stands on such use.

    Use Alcohol 120%.

All these tools are legal provided you own the orginal.
Ive got about 10 of my games in MDS format (Alcohol's format that gets around most protections, like an ISO) and just mount them on a virtual drive when i play them.
Stops me messing about with CD's and loads faster, and nothing illegal about it

if you have the original you're in a legal black hole in the UK. it's legal in the US but there are conflicting rules in the UK

    i lost the URLs.

essentially the UK has no "fair use" laws - the copyright laws are old though. they have clauses that allow you to tape stuff from TV for personal use, but no mention is made of ISO backups. ELSPA on the other hand maintain that games & apps are excluded from the copyright law exclusions. there hasn't been a court case as far as i know to set a precedent, so the fuzzy area remains
