    Yeah, I opened them all.

And I don't think it would be the ports thing as we can all use the wires going through the Router fine, it's only when we go to wireless that there is a problem.

    hello,

Ive just stumbled onto these forums because of a Google search for 'Wireless stutter in online game'.

Basically, I just got a Netgear DG834G wireless router/firewall and am having the EXACT same problems. In wireless mode I get this wierd 'stutter' every minute or so where the game will freeze for about 5 seconds and then carry on.

If i connect with ethernet it works fine but Wireless gives this stutter problem and seeing as I bought a Wireless router because Ethernet wasn't an option for me I would like to have thought this would be sorted

Very very frustrating to be honest.

p.s. Games ive tried : Warcraft III (terrible stutter), Battlefield 2, Counter Strike, EQEmu

Yeah think we've got the same router sansnom, guild wars is impossible to play with wireless, dunno if the new netgear routers have sorted this, will go out and get one if I hear its the case.

well this one is new, literally just received it today.

    Netgear DG834G v2 - latest firmware etc.

It just totally sucks for gaming even if the router + receiver are 10 cm apart there is that large stutter where the game will freeze while it waits for what seems to be packet resending.

****in waste of cash if you ask me, thats my last Netgear purchase ever.

So it seem that the wireless connection is the root of all the problems.......but does anyone know how to fix/prevent this?!

Is Wireless Zero Configuration Service turned off?

Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services

    WZC rescans every few mins.

WCZ is on automatic for me...should i disable it?

p.s. I'm also thinking about threading ethernet instead to the area where i need it.

Only one thing is, the ethernet cable would be about 20 - 25 metres from the router to the computer. any of you ethernet boffins know if this will cause any probs?

    cheers

That length of rj-45 Cable would be fine.

My system downstairs is on the end of a 30m cable I made for it.

    WZC needs be turned off.

If you haven't got software to manage your wireless connection seperately to windows you'll need to enable it then disable it after it has connected.

So I have to let it connect at startup, but then disable WZC after it has connected to the ad-hoc network?

I've just set up the network using Configuration Utility within Windows, and it connects auto at startup each time. Presumably this is what you mean by no software to manage?

Which wifi card do you have?

99% of them come with their own version of WZC that works better.

Unfortunately, I have a very good USB adapter that has some very crap software.....it's a Belkin 54g USB Adapter, (well, 2 actually, one on each machine) but the utility software that comes with it is notoriously rubbish at dealing with WinXP.

    *sobs*

{EDIT} Just wanted to say that turning it off has solved the stuttering in game.....I love you!!!

K I've installed latest drivers (according to Netgear lemmings support that is supposed to fix this problem) but it hasn't.

Ive also disabled WCZ entirely under services.msc

Problem persists, so i think im gonna have to run that 25 metre ethernet cable instead cause this is stupid.

I wish there was some way of logging the connection to see whats causing the sudden halt and continuation cause it can be fine for minutes than suddenly freeze for a few seconds and then its fine again. If i could tell whats happening during that freeze maybe i could find a solution
