Plenty of interest, but when might a UK-dweller be able to purchase a PS3 without incurring the wrath of the authorities ?
(i.e. no sneaking one back inside your 'authentic' Sushi take-out)
I was told 'Spring 06' - so definitely by June 06
I heard 'Summer 06' - so probably by September 06
Maybe 'around Xmas' - so before February 07
Not optimistic - August 07 if we are lucky
Santa tells me to 'be good' and I'll get one for Xmas 07

How the hell are we meant to find that out? Lets all go hire James Bond to sneak into Sony's HQ and find the release date.
You'll know when Sony is ready to give that information. Until then its all BS.
No way you'll see it before 2007

Done it already!
Just take a system where you have to completely rebuild the engine to work on new hardware so dev times are longer and harder

The DevTools war will also be interesting
The larger the pool of people you can dip into for talent - the lower the price per person
The people I know who are in/around gaming tell me that the past 12-24 months have been really hard
As games become ever more complex and the players more demanding - the need for high-quality, rapid development becomes higher
I guess Microsoft probably make more development tools than anyone else on the planet - so that might be an advantage...
...in that it could make it easier to turn a profit earlier on development/programming work
Thoughts ?
BTW: Gust notised that I totaly cantt spel in me avartar

The point about demanding players is a true and valid one.
But surely its also the developers who hold the ultimate responsibility?
I would rather a game developer produces a high quality game that I would like to spend my hard earned cash on, then a game developer rush out a game that the publisher wants out to get more money.
There have been some good examples of this.
The unreal series (excepting Unreal 2) were all designed for PC, no-one was told about them really untill the engines were completed (thats the majority of the work) and the designers trained on the tools.
However, there have been some abominale (sp) games which have just been rushed out the door with major bugs because too much information was released by the publisher too early to fuel anticipation. BF2 is a good example everyone knows about, game came out extremely buggy due to insufficient testing.
If the engine produced for a game is of high quality it can be reused over and over for a fairly long period of time.
Unreal Engine 3 is a good example, its not been released yet, and when it was announced they already had it working on X360 dev kits with a different game to the PC announcements.
All the tech demos that were produced for UE3 were based on Gears of War which is X360 ONLY at this point in time.
In my summer job due to the fact that I wouldn't be there when the system I developed would be used. We completed 2 months worth of stress testing on it before it went out.
We found lots of minor niggles in the system.
And that was just VBA.
I can probably get a more definitive look at this stuff soon. I know people doing game development and game programming courses at my Uni, and I'll get them to post.

Anyway I'll be busy kicking ass on Xbox live to worry about when this arrives
Still no official word on PS3.
However I did find this small article over at Gamershell (They are usually quite accurate) :
http://www.gamershell.com/news/24220.html
my inside source says buy an Xbox360 and you'll get a year out of it before you even have to worry about PS3 endangering your pocket.
But my inside source was a young spotty lad at Curry's, who smelled feintly of gin.
Or was that me?
hmmm

Each battle is different, i feel this one is about when its released. I feel a pre christmas launch will mean people will get the Xbox360, the hype and demand will be for that console. The prices mean its going to get market penetration by people buying for kids for christmas.
I just feel that Xbox360 will sell enough units upfront to cause the "sheep" effect and make all the cool kids have that xbox360 and that will be the console to have, and unless ps3 happens sooner rather than later, it will be established and people will become bored of waiting.
Again just my opinion. And maybe i should have explained my views a bit further.

I reckon it will hit Japan somewhere in 2006 and here at the end of 06.
I seem to remember knowing about Duke Nukem Forever, well forever, I was certainly still in Primary School.
Maybe they'll come out together
I dont really care, ill see how the xbox 360 fares as a media center and it may happen (or ps3 for that matter)
