    **Oblivion Issues**

This one is really bugging me. Oblivion seems such a great game, so you'll appreciate my concern when I play the game the performance is underpar at times. I have a p4 3.0ghz (oc 3.1ghz), 1.5gb ddr2, 7800gtx 1250/450, raptor 74gb, freezer pro7, akasa 62 case. Im just at the beginning of the game, when you come out of the sewers and run of the bridge and jump into water. For me, the jump in the water starts the pc paging. Why is it paging ? and then when walking out of the watrer and up to the first set of characters, it gets quite bad. i cant understand it.

In other games, css, hl2, trl the performance is fine.

Why on earth is the machien doing this, its killing me !!

Have you tried turning some of the features down? Might help. Also, 2gig of ram would help too.

Will 2gb really make much difference over 1.5gb ??(ddr2)

For some strange reason, the game chugs a bit at 1280x1024 in certain parts of the game particularly when using mouse look within buildings, it doesn't view smoothy - it skips and stutters like its running at a really low frame rate even though it shows it running at 50-70FPS. Its a bit like that caching bug from HL2 from a while back. I also occasionally get strange mouse lack occasionally in the inventory page.

    A64 3200+ (oc'd to 2.6ghz)
    1gb DDR
    7900GT (584/1600)

Not completely convinced that its a quality settings issue.....am trawling the net as we speak.....

    Stuff I've found so far:-

sorry couldn't help it, anyway I think you should definitely try those tweak guides above and tbh it is mainly your CPU that is holding you back and possibly RAM, try overclocking your cpu and see if it helps (Oblivion is a CPU intensive game) and if possible upgrade your RAM to like 2/4GBs

there is another guide at atomicmpc

Sometimes a little bit of tweaking can make a lot of difference.

I'd suggest looking at tweaking your windows registry to tell windows to conserve swap file usage and load more system files into ram.

Glad im not the only one that is experiencing these annoyances. Admittedly though Im amazed as you have a 7900gt. However it is a new game, and rev1 so it may be something that can be fixed via a patch ?

I didn't think it an FPS/image quality issues - more of a caching/paging issue - am going to try the following:-

    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management.

    Change DisablePagingExecutive to 1
    Change LargeSystemCache to 1

and also in the Nvidia drivers Performance / Quality section in the Coolbits enabled "additional" settings I changed draw frames ahead from 3 to 0.

And did these changes actual make a difference ? if so how much?

Still playing around with it, but it definitely does makes an improvement to the stuttering - seems like some sort of paging or HDD caching issue. The game engine still doesn't feel as 'fluid' as I would hope though - nothing like the speed you get in UT2004 or Q3 - different games admittedly but I just wonder whether its the game engine itself.

Well it's a stressful game, built on a multi-platform engine (gamebyro).

But all things considered, it's by far the most stable game bethsoft have ever produced and to be honest it's the most stable RPG I've ever owned. Definately, it's not perfect, but it's a good step in the right direction

I have to correct my earlier comments. The game still stutters and chugs during certain scenes even with the tweaks (even though my FPS range from 40-100). If I mouse look up at the sky (looking directly upwards), it chugs.

Getting pretty frustrated with this.....and also with the game itself and the stupid city guards who kill you in an instant when you break into a house even though its part of a quest.

    Grrrrrr.....
