Deus Ex 2 - Invisible War

I was never really a fan of the original Deus Ex (Pronounced 'Day-Us' in case anyone's Latin is a little rusty), mainly due to getting to it too late, and trying to play it on an old system. Even so, when I recieved my review copy of DE2IW I was really looking forward to it. So far, however, I've found it a little disappointing. The storyline, stealthy gameplay style and puzzles have all been excellent, but the performance just isn't that good. An XP2500 and Radeon 9800PRO is an almost cutting edge system, but I've found only just useable frame rates, very similar in fact to another recent DX9 game, Halo. Is this going to be the trend for dx9 games? Are they poorly implimented or is the current dx9 hardware just not up to it?

The game is out in the US though so I doubt that the UK release will be any less buggy. I have only played the demo and it is a really bad game, the graphics are poor, the sound is poor and the game play is extremly unoriginal.

The game ran like complete crap on my main system which, considering its spec, is not on, same applied to Halo, ran like crap for the best part of it. The demo of DX2 did seem like a no-brainer. No creativity like the first one. Also seemed like alot less choice too.........

[spluttering apoplexy]I think Halo and DX:IW both suffer from the same problems (take note, TeePee, this game has really nothing to do with DirectX 9, it was written for a DirectX8 platform); they were both developed for Xbox and then ported. This imposes a number of limitations; 64MB RAM and a crippled GF4MX graphics system. Read the FiringSquad interview with Harvey Smith (the silly sods at FS really played softball with him, but a couple of telling points emerge) or Warren Spector at http://pc.ign.com/articles/444/444433p3.html -

"Basically, developing a single game for PC and console meant designing maps to meet the more restrictive platform -- that is to say, the Xbox. Powerful a piece of hardware as it is, the Xbox has only 64megs of RAM, putting some significant constraints on map size, most notably, which means the PC version probably has more map loads than it might if we hadn't concerned ourselves with the Xbox (or if we'd been willing to create, tune and debug two radically different games".

They hard-coded the game for a crippled nVidia platform, didn't do any redevelopment for PC and as a result it runs like crap on anything other than nVidia hardware, they forced unnecessary maploads onto PC users because they couldn't be bothered not to, crippled PC users with a crap console interface, did a crap "unified ammo" thing, removed inventory management, implemented appallingly poor NPC AI, removed skills development, and then tried to flog it on the DX name. They turned a fine PC RPG/Adventure/FPS into another boring shoot-em-up clone, and not a good one either. Halo, I can understand, since this was intended to be a console game from the start, but to do this to DX? And by the way, how the hell are you supposed to play stealthily if there's no locational damage? Say goodbye to those headshots... **** Ion Storm, **** Warren Spector and double-**** Harvey Smith with a chainsaw.[/spluttering apoplexy]

OK, I finished it last night, and no, it wasn't a cracked version but an entirely genuine retail version.

Basically, as a review, the third paragraph of the post above is entirely acurate.

I spent the whole game waiting for it to open up into what the first game was supposed to be.

Actually Halo was being developed for the PC initially until MS bought out Bungee, which then destroyed any chances of it being remotely good on the PC.

True, but the bulk of the development work was for Xbox (hence the delay while they ported it "back" if you will to PC).

This is beyond belief!!, how many games are going to be delayed or dumbed down from xbox..

This has got to be the worst year for PC games i have ever seen...

I think the xbox is helping to kill the PC off as a gaming platform, where are all the good games gone, they are either xbox exclusive or dumb down ports

Sorry everyone, im so fed up, i mean where's Doom3, Halflife2?? you might laugh but wheres Deus ex 2 cause the game they have released certainly isnt.

I've played halo though not a bad game, just slow.

I've ended up playing old games like System shock 2, GTA 3 (dont like vice city much) NOLF2, AVP2.

Dont get me wrong there are some good games that have been released this year, but not many that i'd consider classics just above average.

Have to disagree with you there serlex sorry , Deus Ex once you get passed the first mission really comes into it's own, you can complete a level with stealth, Rambo style or sniper and also you can be good or evil so the game & characters react to your decisions.. the game was way ahead of it's time and head and shoulders of it's peers.

Also to improve the graphics try this guide, but remember even if you still dont like the how they look there not the most important thing, gameplay is
    http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/deusex/index.shtml

    I've heard of X2 - The threat.

Looks absolutely amazing and the first game was classic, dont know the story of the sequel but the first one was about you being stuck in another galaxy and have to get home so you start to trade with other races to try and get a spacecraft Fast enough, armoured cover enough & with enough arsenal to get there in one peice, classic ELITE rip-off.. i'd say if you like that type of game then get it as the first game - X - Beyond the frontier was very good.

I'm playing the original Deus Ex again now, and I'm really enjoying it, far more than I did the sequal. It's amazing how little things, like how much better it handles loading of levels, contribute to much improved gameplay. The fact that it has already consumed more hours than the sequal took to complete (including all the endings) is another bonus.

TeePee, have you tried the Cassandra Project Deus Ex mod? http://www.deusex-machina.com/cassandra-project/ . Good fun - they've only done ep1 so far, but worth a look.
