Reflections on a nasty Diablo 2 session

A few months ago, i wrote an email to a couple of friends of mine, the three of us still (yes, still) play Diablo 2 from time to time.
I came across this email in my 'sent' box earlier, and would like to share it with you guys as it still tickles me.
Although it is specific to Diablo 2 (i play as a druid character with a number of NPC's in my team), much of the content should be familiar to all us regular late night gamers....

Ok, so there I was last night, my girlfriend had gone to sleep early and me with a good few hours before I was ready for bed and alone on the computer. So I did what any young male would do in that situation – booted up Diablo 2.

In Hell, Act 1, where I have so far got 4 waypoints. My characters had leveled up one (so my support guy can use the superduper new staff – very cool BTW) and I figured that’d I’d be fairly rock hard now.

Went to the forth waypoint, and started to explore the map out a bit. Found the underground hole, began exploring. Got twitted when a bunch of bad guys chased me, and chased me into a bunch of other rock hard bad guys. So paid for support bloke to return, went back. Died again.

Ok, thought I, need to think this through a bit. Went back, a toe step at a time, not rushing. Gradually getting back to the area I was at, the killed me.

Went to my stash, and got all my spare ‘second’ kit, including various cool rings etc, to tool myself up again. Bought support person, got all crows ready etc, and went back. They killed me quicker than before.

Went back to try to get second kit, they killed me again.

OK, so need to have another option. I bought some super boots to run quickly with, and went back to draw them away, support blokey and all. Found them, got them to chase me, and the 2 groups behind me chased me into a 3rd group, who all twatted me. Oh well, at least my original kit is now not that close, so I went back again (although noticing by the time it was nearly midnight) to get it. All 3 groups had managed to get back to the original dead bodies, blocking my path to the fast boots too. They killed me.

By this point, I was noticing it was about 10 past midnight ish, and I was getting tired. I also knew that I could turn off the computer as I’d lose all my kit, so I needed to rescue it all before progressing.

I went to town and bought all the hardest kit I could find, which cost me a pretty penny or 2. Got number 2 bloke, got my crows, my vine, and all my army. Went back a step at a time, and began laying in to them. At this point, I WASN’T dying, although was getting though a number of large purple potions, and one by one the kick-ass minions were dropping. I found a space through them all where I could see my kit, so made a dash. Big mistake. I couldn’t pick any of it up because of course I was carrying all newly bought stuff, and they killed me on my own by surrounding me.

Died a couple more times, lost about a million credits (not exaggerating, but about a million) in dying and buying support blokey’s and armour etc. Getting close to 1am by now. Can’t stop or I’ve lost it all. Tried all tricks in the book, and by sheer persistence and gradually wearing them down, by about 1.45 I had done it (died in total approx 30 times I’d say). Got my kit all back, including all my second stuff, and sold all the newly bought amour. Can’t tell you how relieved I was! Got through the tunnel without anything like so much resistance, didn’t die, and got to the other side. By this time it was shortly after 2am, and I was knackered – I’d only wanted a quick blast, and ended up with the fight of my Diablo life.

And then, and then….. I found the waypoint. The goal, the subject of my desire and the reward for all of my effort. Activated.

It was the third waypoint, and I’d just spend the best part of 4 hours backtracking over ground I have already done.

    Nice.

Still, at least I got this story out of it……

I thought that if you close the game, your body just spawns in the camp area?

Don't tell me after 5 years of playing that i've made a mistake about that....
