That's very impressive. If that was me I'd have thought that was close enough for my liking and would've got my ass out of the army asap!

Maybe I'm just being cynical but isn't this completely unlikely? Okay, the round's gone through the iPod - but in all honesty how likely is it that half an inch of soft plastic and aluminium would have had any real affect on a heavy 7.62mm round at 900~m/s, let alone enough of an effect to "save his life"?

I'm sure the ceramic and kevlar strapped to his chest probably helped a lot more than his MP3 player

I'm sure that there was some effect, but I doubt the "couple of feet" bit is entirely truthful, as most 7.62mm rounds would get halfway through the kevlar at a much longer range. That said, as the AK-47 design is not patented, the quality of the rifle and the rounds could be really shoddy.

As a target rifle shooter I'm not qualified to make any more detailed assumptions about short-range ammunition...the stuff I use would put a hole through the vest at ~1km

Though exactly the same, like you said most of the recovered weaponry in Iraq/Afghanistan was old and in poor condition. No way can you be shot by an fully functional ak-47/ammunition from a couple feet away and suffer no wounds and I surely don’t think an ipod would be much of an help anyway.

Still I give it three weeks and the general media will be reporting this, the story itself and the lad’s smile is bound to attract attention even if there is some ’’uncertainties’’

My thoughts exactly, your not alone in being a tad skeptical. Fair play to him though.

There is no mentioning of the angle he was shot at, as this is a major factor but then again, not like you could whip out a protractor now is it?

That picture is a tad suspect, as if you look at images of what a kevlar vest looks like after its been shot at point blank by an AK-47, there is always a large, and I'd like to enthasize the LARGE, exit wound or in this case, large exit damage.

Given the thickness of and iPod, I'm suspicious as to why the top-right hand-side corner did not shatter...

...meh, either way, thats one less iPod in the world, lol
