    looks good

see if you can get a standard 50mm lens too - you'll find they have a better apature range than most zooms ( or they did when I did my A Level about 100 years ago )

not quite - you'll get the same focal length , but a fixed focal length lens, ie one that isn't "zoom" will often give you better light collecting abililty and slightly clearer ( as there are fewer optical elements for the light to pass through )

I used to use zoom lenses , but changed to a 50mm and walked closer to what I was trying to photograph

have you got a couple of clear filters for the front of each lens ? Its a lot cheaper to replace a £5 scratched filter than to replace an entire lens

Excellent choice, the canon slr's are great, and there autofocusig abilities are top notch. Also, ya might wanna get yourself a polaroid filter, great for getting shots of water. Now save up for a billingham camera bag...

    Better yet, a polarising filter.

And if you do, make sure that you get a circular polariser. They come in linear and circular versions - the linear is usually much cheaper but does NOT like auto-focus systems.

Like Moby said, I'd STRONGLY recommend getting filters for BOTH lenses, though you might think about a decent UV or Skylight filter as opposed to clear. They only cost a few quid and are ideal for lens protection, in addition to getting rid of haze from UV in sky scenes.

Look at LowePro bags as well. As for cost, anything for £20 to £400 - depends what you want ..... eg. how big, how much kit it'll take, bag or backpack, etc.

Billinghams are crazy expensive. Happily while I worked at Jessops I snapped up a mint one secondhand for about a third of the new price. Mainly for the pose to be honest, I'm not that keen on it. Bags always seem expensive for what you get. Lowepros are very good, and quite expensive. Jessops bags are good for the money, although the Town and Country range is a bit Fugly. The Pacific range is a bit more stylish.

As for the camera, it's a pretty nice one, that's reasonable value. The lenses are reasonably good but if you get keen, you'll probably want to buy some more expensive ones. For the time being, you can maximise sharpness by shooting at F8-F11 (where you're not going to get camera shake, obviously). Tripods are very useful if you like taking any kind of landscape or scenery pics.

My main SLR system is Canon, and I've got a mixture of Canon and Sigma lenses for it. I really ought to start using it again to be honest.

Oh, and don't cheap out on the film. Good film makes a difference. Sorry if any of that is teaching granny to suck eggs.
