Website to find distance travelled offroad

Does anyone know of any websites where it is possible to find the distance from one point to another, where the distance traveled isn't on a road. For example i want to find how far i am running at the moment, but i go along a canal so obviously i can't just get directions from A to B. I'm thinking something along the lines of drawing the route on a map and it works out the distance for you.

Google Earth has a measurement thing It's very useful I've used it for similar reasons numerous times
