    Is it me or....

The date changing actually does nothing to change our lives.

They don't reset on new years eve at midnight, they carry on. If it were really a new start I'd say now is the time to commit crimes and other nefarious acts as in 60 mins time it'll all be forgotten and won't matter

In other words what is the significance of new years eve?

You're right. It doesn't really mean anything.

Over dinner tonite with the wife, we were saying the same thing.

Yes, we had a special dinner.
Yes, we have a bottle of bubbly ready

But other than that... big deal.

We don't go out now, simply because it is far overpriced to even get into your normal bars etc, drinks are higher etc.

It seems to have less significance now than it did say 5years ago etc.

heh heh, crazy balloons you got there coco!

oh yeh, new year, it just stops us being in month 20,000 (not accurate to prevent comebacks from anal retentives with too much time on their hands) or something, never *meant* anything, never was suppose to.

Oooh, bah, you old grumps! It is just an excuse to have a good time in my opinion. Indeed a year is just another unit of time. It just does not occur that often - once a year in fact . This makes it kind of special, which I guess is why people celebrate it.

human beans have been about considerably longer than 2004 years, have they not?

so who started this here AD calendar?

the calendar, as is, monthly and 24 hours wise, makes sense, it fits in with the sun & moon cycle, months & seasons

but, who started this thing? 2004? says who? Christians? Druids?

I just know somebody will have an answer

Why yes indeed, good point. I propose we celebrate everyday like it is new years eve . I was referring to the passing of a whole year as a unit time though.

Christmas & new year were invented by a syndicate of Evil corporate shops & pubs to drain our hard earned cash. At least thats the excuse I use for working both for 4x salary

Christmas I understand entirely why we celebrate, or at least why I do. As someone who considers them self a Christian I feel the birth of the son of god is a date worthy of celebration. New year on the other hand is just a day like any other with no real significance other than marking the end of the calender year.

Also before any of you pedants start talking about the fact Xmas day is all wrong it doesn't matter, it's the event that's being celebrated not the exact date.

I agree its good to celebrate Xmas if you're christian but its all gone a bit weird now. They love christmas in Japan even though most of the population are Buddhist.
