    Blairs Resegnation

I don't particularly care about politics, but I'm sure someone was going to make this thread anyway.

He just said "Britain is not a follower today, Britain is a leader."

Now I don't know much about all this stuff, but can anyone really argue we didn't follow the US to Iraq?

    Oh well.

I thought it was interesting what i heard on the news earlier. He is the only prime minister that has been left in this manner. Only Maggie had the length or service Tony's had, and he was pushed out with a tear in her eye. This whole graceful standing down after 10 years in office is quite something.

And yes, give it a generation and i think we will have quite a different oppinion of him. I personally think it takes about that long for everyone to realise what a difference a prime minister like him and Maggie made. Of course it's not all good, but time gives a perspective to things. He might be critisised for things now that he will be respected for in the future. who knows.

I'm opposed to the Iraq war (on a number of levels) but the relationship the U.K. has with the U.S. politically and militarily makes it inconceivable that any other leader would've done anything else IMHO. I can't see that changing any time soon, regardless of what any incumbent says.

Blair will be remembered for Iraq, I think. He was the only thing that really made the Labour Party electable though. I've very little time for any of them, TBH.

I think he was a pretty good PM tbh. I'm not saying I was pro the Iraq war but the bottom line is that he acted on what he thought was right. I'd rather he'd acted than not acted if he genuinely thought he should. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and yes he proabably was wrong but he done what he thought was right at the time and that's what I valued. I bet none of the hypocrites who slated him have never done anything wrong in their lives that looking back they shouldn't have.

    Angry

Any PM who lies to parliament and the British people is better off gone.

He may have believed his own bull**** about Iraq, but he should never have fabricated a story in order to get Parliament's approval.

He is effectively a mass-murderer. Good riddance.

Well sorry to disappoint, but I actually think he's done a good job and it's a shame he's going.

Yes, Britain is a leader - but being a leader doesn't always mean telling people what to do and them doing it - we've not been able to do that for years. Britain leads by example in a lot of ways, and comes onboard with the Americans not to direct how to do things, but to show them another way, leading by example.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But I think going into something like Iraq with the Americans was probably better than letting them do things by themselves with no-one giving them an alternative viewpoint.

I think we should elect The Swedish Chef as prime minister. He is easily the best of the muppets

Is there a graph of other long term country leaders with the same type of data?

On it's own, although it might be interesting, i don't think it is very useful. Who's to say that every other prime minister/president that has been in power for 10 years wouldn't have something very very similar too, or perhaps even more dramatic?

There probably are more dramatic ones, and it's obvious that there'll be a decline in popularity over time as this is the same with all people in power. People are excited because they're something new and exciting, they're something different in comparison to the previous leader, then of course they realise the reality of their power and how it's not benefiting the country. They want Gordon Brown because of the promises he's made I guess, same as any other leader.

Never had a Prime Minister in my lifetime that i have thought i could trust one iota, I pretty much think its a sad state of affairs that people like this are the ones in power.

As Billy Connolly said (and i paraphrase)

The desire to be a politician should automatically exclude them from ever being one

My definition of redundant is an airbag in a politicians car.

I am young but still view Blair as a great leader of this country. It is probably because I was not born in Britain and am not aware of the things you guys always seem to complain about but when I am enlightened as to what it is you are complaining about I just reply "go to South Africa then you will find real issues to complain about".

IMO Iraq was a joint adventure. I'm not happy that he's going, he's one of the few politicians I actually like.
