I was about to post exactly the same thing

My colleague and I have tried Vista here at work and we've gone back to XP on our machines, and installed XP on a few new laptops we've received that came with Vista (Good job not giving us proper XP drivers, Sony )

It's too buggy, generally sluggish and I dont like the interface (although I might get used to it). There's plenty of software and drivers that don't work properly, and I can't see a major advantage of using it over XP. No doubt it will improve with time/service packs

I've run into a few annoying issues but anything that doesnt work I use my XP laptop for.

    Things I like:

    - Aero
    - UAC
    - Far more drivers inbuilt (NVidia drivers and Realtek RAID drivers for example)
    - Installation routine (Few clicks and less time consuming)
    - Interface (Especially the resdesigned start menu)
    - Folder navigation (Drop down arrors next to folders in the address bar)

    Things that arent to good:

    - Older hardware may not work even with XP drivers (due to its age, kinda to be expected you could argue in its defense)
    - Older games may not work (same as above)
    - Windows Media Player (Doesnt want to intergrate itself into Opera or firefox meaning I'm forced to use IE 7 for multimedia)
    - IE 7 for some reason loads and works fine on my XP laptop yet seems to crash when it feels like it (Second install of Vista Now)

On the whole though I prefer using Vista over XP because it looks so much nicer and I spend more time at the desktop now then playing games.

Oh I quite agree - the bug is horrible but it's about the only really nasty one i've seen Vista-wise. I don't think MS have ever managed to build a good file browser and so i've been using Opus on XP too. I wish MS would buy gpsoftware and just get them to do explorer from now on

No problems here, other than Sony Ericsson not releasing a PC suite that is compatible with Vista - but you can't blame MS for that.

some people have been stuck in a SERIOUS short-term-memory rut if they think there's anything special about problems with vista, that haven't happened with every single OS release ever

I'd switch to Ubuntu if it had support for webcam through Skype. I haven't touched Vista, I've got unlimited licenses through work but I don't see how I'm going to get any advantages out of it in comparison to XP at the moment.

Agreed, people pretend that its only MS that gets problems. I think they should create a MS bashing sport.

I expected problems, I didn't expect simple things like file transfers being unusable.

I am going to go ahead and say that most 5+ years does not classify as short-term memory at all

Other than that, I agree, that's why I never make the jump before the first service pack at the earliest. In fact, I might have waited more than 2 years before making the jump to XP.

I used it on a spare machine for about 6 months, but it was buggy, slow, bloated, unreliable, and completely not worth bothering with.

So I re-formatted and stuck ubuntu on it - never looked back since

all XP's problems were solved 5+ years ago? that would place them as being fixed at least in may 2002 (if not sooner), which would be a fair while before SP1, and in fact a mere 8 months after release (if not quicker)

and by short-term i mean, yes, short-term. nobody remembers the same when 2K launched? ME (which was never fixed)? 98? 95? 3.11?

it's not an event. most of the problems come from bad drivers and badly written applications (which MS aren't to blame for) and a culture of backward-compatible-to-version-1.0 (win1.0 apps can be made to run on vista with some gentle persuasion). keeping 25 years of brokenness so foocorp can run their ancient custom app, whilst at the same time trying to change with the times, is what leads to a hellishly complicated mess of incompatibility (and random non-functional apps)

Short term memory is measured in seconds, maybe minutes, rarely longer. I was being pedantic, hence the smilie.

The 5+ years comment was in reference to the similar complaints when XP was released. Not a reference to when it was deemed fixed/stable for my use.

    Ubuntu FTW

I tried the beta a while back and aero was pretty but from a users point of view this was about the only feature i could see worth upgrading.

Add this to the fact its slower, has very poor driver support and is buggy (although i have no personal experience of this) then i would have to agree, it isnt too great at all.

The only reason i would go for it would be Media Center.
