OoooOOOoooh, you had your self-righteous head on yesterday did you? Either that or you had a big spoon and a big pot to stir it up with
So you've never taken a guilty pleasure in the annoyance of others? Hmmmm? Never delighted in someone vacuous (I love that word too ) finally, finally getting their comeuppance and proving that they're not above the rules?
I didn't think George Michael deserved prison, just I personally wished he'd been jailed And eaten by a lion while there, if at all possible.
I do loathe him with unreserved passion however, so maybe my views are slightly biased. Good performer granted, but apart from that...
i dunno about paris, but ive got away with a few things i shouldn't have on the roads, and it did teach me a lesson. needless to say i don't do anything stupid now
Oh yes it is .... in England, at least. I can't speak for Scotland.
The maximum penalty (on summary conviction) for either driving or attempting to drive, either with excess alcohol or while unfit through alcohol, is :-
- level 5 fine (£5000 currently), and/or
- up to 6 months in prison
and
- disqualification, of course.
And that's just for summary conviction by magistrates. If it's on indictment, the stakes go way up.
Current magistrates guidelines suggest that for a breath reading of 116-300, custody should be "considered", and that for 131+, custody should be the starting point for sentencing calculations. Similar bandings are given for blood and urine readings. Clearly, not many drink drivers get jailed (unless there's more to it than that), but it certainly is possible.
Oh, and if the offender has a previous drink-driving conviction within three years, those same guidelines state that custody should "seriously be considered", regardless of the alcohol reading.
Hilton wasn't sentenced to jail for a driving offence, though. She got jail time for parole violation.
Yup, the reason this topic gets people so riled up wheras Bush and Putin's sabre rattling tosh doesn't raise an eyebrow (well, okay I am mildly alarmed by the ground-based Star Wars II) is that the delicate matter of Ms Hilton's incarceration raises a very, very important point which people are right to be incensed by - that of social equality and equal rights irrespective of means.
I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling that in the US the availability of the best legal counsel for cash equates to a different tier of judicial processing for the wealthy, and that doesn't sit too well with my moral barometer. OJ with that?
Hence I'm not specifically cheering because Paris Hilton has been sent back to the slammer*, but because something I felt was unfair has been recitified by a judicial system I thought would let it slide. Which is ace!
*Yeah, alright...I was a bit.
Totally wrong, even in Scotland

You kiddin? Try telling that to the people who have lost their Sons, Daughters, Moms and Dads at the hands of someone who was drink driving.Other offences include driving or
attempting to drive when unfit through
drink or drugs, or even being in charge
of a motor vehicle while unfit.
• These offences, plus failure to provide a
specimen when required, all carry
penalties of automatic disqualification for
varying periods, plus, in some cases, the
possibility of a prison sentence and the
certainty of large fines.
Banging up a few drunk drivers would probably have won the approval of most people - in 2005 they were responsible for 590 deaths on the road and a huge number of injury's. Its just ashame we dont have the room in the jails.
The logical flaw in that is that people that drink drive do so not knowing if they'll cause an accident that kills or mains someone else, but they do so with total disregard for the fact that their actions could have very severe consequences for others. And they're putting their own transient pleasure from an extra drink (or drinks) above the risk to other's lives and livelihoods. It's utterly selfish, and were it down to me, would be FAR more severely punished than it currently is. My attitude comes from having seen the results of such crass selfishness first-hand.
Who needs jails? A stout oak tree and a few feet of rope will suffice.
The above remark, by the way, is a bit facetious, but I DO regard drink driving as utterly contemptible. If you fire a gun down a populated street, you might not be sure of hitting someone, but you must be aware you're putting other people's lives at significant risk. Drink drivers have a similar disregard for others.
Alsenoir you obviously missed the same video linked in this thread ;P
