Sorry.. and I don't mean to be pedantic, but it DOES have an atmosphere - admittedly very thin, and cold, and almost entirely CO2 but nonetheless an atmosphere....The result is some terrific pictures of the Red Planet, showing a vast, rubble-strewn wasteland entirely devoid of atmosphere or intelligent life.

Yes but think of the conditions needed for 'life' to exist. Even a bacterium has certain requirements to be able to function.
