Good luck with that, I assume you're buying on the open market and trying to work your way into the local market? We know people who've had many-an-issue with that kind of stuff. We're looking at buying a place over here first, then moving out for the reason that we may never be able to move back. It's a tough situation but we're both local so we should have no problem really.

Side issue, is Hexus banned on Chinese internet?
    Most probably

Slightly off topic, but there is a site that lets you check what is and isn't banned in china, cant remember where though.

Having no expertise in children nor china, I can't offer any advice, but the best of luck to you and your wife to be

I am also planning to buy a place to live in china , but the housing market over there is complete different to here. There are lots of things to watch out for :

    1. Even if you brought the flat/ house it still doesn't belong to you , instead you get a 70 year lease on it . So after 70 years the council ( the land owner) can kick you out of your own home if they wanted to. This is why they can building stuff very quickly over there, no need to get permission from the locals.

    2. All the heatings are provide by one huge boiler room and you are expected to pay money towards the running cost ( I assumed that your will be living in a flat , since it is all most impossible to buy a house over there in the city ).

    3. Some of the flat can be brought by local people only ( these flat had been hugely discounted).

I suggest you to have a talk with the bank over there to get a list of estate agencies and start from there.

Most impotently don't buy any house which is more then 10 year old. ( they are not designed to last ).

Cheers ! We're heading for Jersey rather than Guernsey and we qualify (in theory) because my missus is classed as an essential worker (midwife). Just need to wait for a job for her now, they'd been coming up regularly until we made our mind up. Now there hasn't been one for months ! Typical Maybe if you move to China we'll just move to Guernsey and steal your identities. What did you say your date of birth was again ?

I have no advice to give. Only ever lived in hong Kong, which is way different from mainland China. However I wish you luck and I hope that you understand beforehand that it will not be easy. China is a very foreign place, even Hong Kong is, and it's very easy for Westerners to feel completely isolated. Your best bet is to start to learn Cantonese now. However you will find that you can't buy anything you are used to. Bread, milk, baked beans, whatever; all unavailable except for expensive specialist outlets.

Having said that, if you know what to expect it's a beautiful country and the people, though pretty alien, are as friendly as people anywhere. If you can get to Hong Kong you can at least immerse yourself in a bit of British culture. I would do it, and I imagine that you will manage. Remember, the first year is the hard one.

I'd agree with Brucelles. Its a very different way of life...very. Also you seem a bit naive about the travelling and visas part. The Chinese Embassy should be your second stop after consulting the foreign office.

As for the type of work you wish to do, with orphanages is probably not what the Chinese want. That is Westerners entering the country to work with and potentially show to the outside a weakness in their country. For a long time they denied they even had orphanages. The few who adopt children would probably be a good source of info, I'm sure someone has a website or book about it. I know of an employee at a previous company who tried to adopt and it took 3 years and ALOT of money, put it this way you could have bought a brand new Audi A4 for the same price.

Just look at the greatfirewall of China test, it is a very controlled country. Certainly from a government level I doubt you will be welcome, there is very few foreigners in China, tiny not just in terms of the relative size but just in straight out numbers. You will be isolated from anything you know because its just not available.

You need to do some seious reading before embarking on this journey which despite all the negativity I wish all the luck in the world but be prepared for the setbacks.

The Mrs and I spent a couple of months travelling around China. Although your sentiments are great, if I were you, I'd actually go and try living there for a spell before making the decision to move and buy a house. It's a completely different culture, some things are better, some things are much worse.

The majority of China is Mandarin. The places we're looking to live are Mandarin speaking areas.

That is not quite true , in fact only 60 or so percent of people speak Mandarin , rest of them speak their own local language.

Because the vast size of china , there are lots of places with their own language and culture . Just out of curiosity Kezzer where about in china are you heading to ?
