Finally, after waiting patiently for nVidia to release GPU drivers that allow me to play games under Vista, it appears that, after initial tests, they’ve finally gone and done it. I know these benchmarks are purely synthetic tests but heck, the improvement is positively astounding.
With XP my setup was averaging around 8250 points with Vista achieving a meagre 6500. That essentially reflected in Vista 64bit (with my configuration) being wholly unsuitable for gaming; it was very noticeable when actually trying games too – games which should have run without problems at settings which matched my hardware where being choked. This has left me having to dual boot between XP and Vista which is far from ideal.
Well after installing a new beta driver, released yesterday, I ran the test again ... 7850 points under Vista 64bit! Yeah! That was last night though and after my meds started kicking in I could no longer sit in front of my PC to continue testing. Much like having to pinch myself to believe really awake, I’ve performed the rudimentary testing again ... the same results! I wasn’t dreaming
Oh damn. This now means I’m possibly faced with the fourth or fifth OS re-installation in as many months, not to mention re-installing all of those game titles yet again ... entering all of those serial codes yet again
So, the moral of this story? Early bird catches the worm? Hell no, I need a proverbial antonym. Why is it I’m so eager to try out new hardware and software, sweating blood, tears and hard cash in the process? It’s been a ride of wonderment and disappointment, disillusionment and contentment. Has it been worth it? Hell yeah, I’m a techie!
Now, I’m off to test some games to see if they can back-up this mammoth point increase ... it’s not quite XP performance, but it sure is close
