A Short History Of Nearly Everything: Bill Bryson - honestly couldn't put that one down
If you're looking more for fantasy.. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel (Susanna Clarke) was a pretty good read. Ahm.. Sci Fi.. anything by Asimov, The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy (Trilogy of 5)..
I can probably think of more

I read too many.
Lots of crime fiction. Ian Rankin, Michael Conelly, Harlen Coben, Kathy Reichs, Lee Child, Karin Slaughter. and others.
Fantasy/Science Fiction. Terry Pratchett, J.R.R. Tolkein, Fiona McIntosh, Ian M Banks, Jasper Fforde
General Fiction. Ian Banks, Christopher Brookmyre, loads of others.
Lots of non-fiction too but i can't remember specifics.
Unless i'm looking for particular authors, i gust grab three at a time in 3for2 offers in Waterstones (and Ottakars before waterstones bought them). Also used to pick up bargains in Fopp, but they are no more.

Read a couple of Great books while I was on holiday a couple of weeks ago:
Scar Tissue :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scar-Tissue-...3391280&sr=8-1
Brilliant rollercoaster ride - a good, fairly unglamourised insight into 'rock and roll' lifestyle
Altered Carbon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Altered-Carb...3391431&sr=1-1
Non stop sci-fi thriller, good complex plot and with lots of violence/action
Original Dragonlance Trilogy:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dragonlance-...3391578&sr=1-1
IMO the finest Fantasy tome since LOTR, read it twice now, once when I was a schoolboy and again in my thirties and loved it just as much - ultimate escapism.

Robin Hobb - The Farseer Trilogy
Robin Hobb - The Liveship Traders
Robin Hobb - The Tawny Man
Robin Hobb - The Soldier Son Trilogy - last book released today, off to borders after work
anyone beginning to see a pattern here?
Anyways, other than that, read George R R Martin or David Gemmell
I have read a few Terry Pratchett, i did like those...how many books does he have? ..... loads!!!
Yep. i think it is about 30 or so.
When i find an author i like i tend to go through their entire works. Like i said, i read a lot of books. I have been known to go through 4 or 5 in a two week trip offshore. And we aren't talking short books. A 400-500 page crime finction can be gone in two days
The His Dark Material Trilogy by Phillip Pullman is amazing!
I'm not a fan of fantasty per se, but if you're just looking for an uncomplicated good read, you could do worse then David Eddings Belgariad series. It might be a little immature for your tastes, but it's a stunning series with very memorable characters...

It's the book that inspired The Matrix.
