    Wink Boring Wide Web...

Recently, its been dawning on me how bland and boring the Internet has become.

This is most weird to me though, as not too long ago I had lots to do online, all I tend to find myself doing these days, are gaming online, chatting with my girlfirend on MSN and surfing the heXus forums.

I also mill about on megagames and 3D gamers from to time about once a week for patch information and some interesting news stories.

But thats about it, I remember I used to go out on "quests" looking for interesting programs and tools that did cool things etc. but now, most of my net surfing begins with google and frankly this disgusts me.

I'm not into the whole youtube style sites or myspaz style sites either, it seems I've run out of things to do online now or I've fundamentally altered my ways of surfing the Internet beyond recognition of the way I used to be.

I'd like to point out, even though I've stated what appears to be me saying the Internet is boring, I'm actually saying its me thats the boring one

This is not so much a thread to request links to websites, but more to see what everyone else thinks about the way they use the Internet and also to see if I'm alone on this stance or not .

    Same as really, mate.

I don't go looking for new content really; very rarely will you find me on MySpace or YouTube. I have a small set of bookmarks, and I vist these sites daily (IGN, HEXUS, BBC, etc), then I've got my online banking, and I play Poker. Throw in MSN and Hotmail and thats about it.

    So you are not alone.

EDIT: Have to mention Wiki actually, I love that site. I can read it for hours. Bestestestest non forum called HEXUS site on the net.

EDIT: Also, I find myself having to choose between quality and quantity; for instance, in the Nintendo forums on HEXUS, there hasn't been a single post about anything since 7:30 last night (and that was me), so there isn't much going on to say the least, that forum is as dead as Harry Potter.

On, say, GameFAQs Nintendo forums, there would be 50-60 replies to any thread I care to start within an hour. All saying 'LOL MaRio is GAy!' though.

So its 1 sensible post every 3 days on the HEXUS gaming forums, or 90 posts full of crap on others.

    Gimmeh both!

I spend a lot less time on line, mainly because I've stopped reading slashdot, which is a goldmine of useless drivel. about 90% of my time online is now divided between hexus facebook and penny arcade now.

You might be one to cringe at the idea, but Facebook has breathed some life into it for me, there's so many people posting stuff up there I know now. I hated the idea of Myspace but Facebook is much better.

That and getting a Stumble Upon button for when I'm really bored and can't think where to go!

I've got two words for you Stumble upon.

Install the above program in your browser and you will never be wondering what to do on the Internet. I have found so many great websites via this program that I would have never dreamed of searching for.

I use Bebo (sparingly) and YouTube etc. and I still find the web boring. I have alot of bookmarks that I actually use, which usually takes me 30-45 mins when I first login to read/check - any actions (mainly replying on forums, messages, emails etc.) obviously require more time.

There's been many a time I sit down, then after boring myself silly of typing in addresses into the address bar, then deleting it and typing another one etc. etc. I just go do something else.

Most of the time I have something to do on the net though, I have to look up how to do most of my course online - and 99% of the work I do is on the computer, so it's handy when I don't know something.

Stumble Upon is good, but I end up reading far too much useless stuff. End up thinking it was mildly amusing then realise I've wasted 3 hours reading about architecture that I could instead have spent on Viva Pinata

I've had a bit of sick time off work recently, so rather than just go aimlessly round the web I've forced myself to research things that I have a vague interest in that I may find useful in future, like DIY, property renovation/development etc.

It's already come in useful as I plastered a wall that I damaged when, um, a little plastered myself the other night. Wouldn't have known where to start a week ago but it was off to b&q and sorted in an hour. Internet-taught DIY FTW !

Bad point is the missus now thinks we should look for a restoration project while I'm off. She'll just have to wait, there's more important stuff like that Viva Pinata I mentioned earlier One day at a time, love, one day at a time...

Reading through this thread maybe we could start an new one, posting random sites and links that people might want to look at ? We cant all know all the sites and might find something of interest for those boring days ?

Bloglines basically means I don't have to visit all the sites to see what's new, I just go there, then check a few non-RSS sites out, visit a few forums (hexus obviously, ukpassats.co.uk, a friends forum), facebook, hotmail, and austin-rover.co.uk (why are stories about failure / the "under-dog" so appealling?), ebay, amazon, autotrader...

    but after that... I'm bored.

Aww you can never get bored of the web.

If theres not plenty of mundane fanboi fights to read and laugh at, theres always tiesto fans to take the michael out of in a light-hearted jokey way like I do on my other digital home

My usual usage is email, MSN or other messengers, WebTV (joost, hexus.tv, korean football links ), online gaming, aquiring rare music sets live from DJ's and a few small things that escape the realm that is my mind atm.

thanks - I'm now getting withdrawals as I've no web at home now!

If I ever find myself getting bored, I try and learn something - at the moment, I'm fiddling around with git.
