    Amerika

I was just talking to an American friend who is a Dr. Who fan. He thinks that Dr. Who is anti-American because of the following incidents in the programme:

One show had New New Yorkers as a race that died out because they were all drug addicts and a virus was passed with the drugs. There was a sub-race/class of people who were stuck for years on a motorway to nowhere because they were too stupid to know better.

In the episode set in New York in 1929, he think sthat Americans were shown in a bad light because of their building the Empire State building while the poor live in tents. Someone says “How can they be building that if they can’t fed the poor?”

Apparently there were others, including a buffoon of an American President who gets killed. To roars of applause in my house.

Does Dr. Who reflect what we feel in this? Are we really anti-American?

    (Thanks Evilmunky)

Well the 1929 is largely true (except perhaps the Dalek side...) - as "Hooverville" did exist... (although the date was slightly off)

Since when have the rich been concerned with the state of the poor ?

True. I thought that the New York 1929 episode was innocent myself.

i'm so anti american i want to live there.

and i don't watch Dr Who either.

I know plenty of hard working intelligent Americans, with family values and excellent attitudes towards life in general.
What i do blame for the anti-american feeling that seems to permeate UK forums is :-

    1. The Bush Administration - I think its practically entirely corrupt, i think he cheated his way into office and i think he is a puppet for far more intelligent and sinister people.

    2. Oprah, Jerry Springer et al, Americas dumbest criminals, cops, and all the other tripe that plasters our TV screen day after day - Its all crap, its sensationalist crap at that, and it shows the worst side of their community
We're only here for the Banter - The Luvvies - Chewin' The Fat

Violence and Lubrication is the solution to fixing everything, if it still doesn't work, you need more lubrication.

Me too. Without the Bush regime I don't think we would have had any of this. I also think that Tony's sucking up to Bush gave us all a feeling that we should edge away a bit.

I don't actually want to live in the USA, their TV is awful, but I like Americans in general and reserve my disgust for a few specific ones, mostly in government.

So do I , in fact a lot of them are family.
However, there is no getting away from the fact that they are also a bit insular & to we cynical Europeans also somewhat naive ...

The US government has always been corrupt.

They were so afraid of socialism that basic social services were never put into place and as such this is a horrible country in which to be poor. Ignorance and bad education allows large corporations to really exploit the working class to benefit the rich. This has started to affect the middle class as well, especially during Bush's time in office (It's been called his 'war on the middle class').

It's a fantastic country to be rich, and there are some basic freedoms which we are not allowed in europe.

There is always someone moaning about something . Dr Who is fictional , its a kids programmme. Ok so some events might loosely be used in the programme .Next thing they will believe Daleks are for real !

Ah come on.. British comedy has taken the collective piss out of just about every walk of life - the French and the Germans suffer a fair amount. Why is America immune?

They're TV is hardly pro-Brit, their stereotypical Briton is a man in a top hat with a monocle with a posh accent (just shows they look up to us tbh )

Such as the freedom for average Joe to own a gun, leading to frequent, appalling massacres?

Was there at least a discussion about it probably not being a good idea to hand out guns like sweets, to any average Joe who wants one, after Virgina Tech?

I'm guessing not. Our American friends do seem to be very slow at 'getting it'.

The trouble with us Brits is we invent something great, then use that as an excuse to slack because we invented something xx years ago. That and inventing sports and then losing at them. Usually quite badly...

So every nation has a failing, Americas is the American Dream. Not the dream itself, but the way it is sought, remember IBM? The holocaust was organised on an IBM Card Based Computer system...
