Re: Microsoft have killed off autopatcher...

Im so pee'd off about this....

I've lost count of how many peoples machine I go to and use this program on. Ya know, the kinda people that don't know what patch Tuesday is, or have auto update turned on "because it slows things down".
Just got to love the reasoning though....

"It is Microsoft policy that the distribution of supplemental code such as hotfixes, security updates, and service packs is discouraged. This policy is in place due to concern for the safety and security of our customers, as we can only guarantee the download’s contents when it comes from a Microsoft Web site. Distribution of these materials without permission is also an infringement of our copyright," Microsoft said in a statement.
So its ok for every magazine under the sun to include patches on the cover CD/DVD, but do the same online and get a smack.

Autopatcher actively helped admins more than MS do. Unbelievable.

You'd of thought they did like a sysinternals type thing, and just bought them.

I wounder if, as the artical implies, its to do with the moronic WGA.

Probably. With exception to the WMP11 and a few other updates, autopatcher allowed one to patch the system without using crappy windows update or the WGA system. Either way, shooting themselves in the foot.

Probably. But there is quite a few _easy_ ways to pass WGA, even on illegal serials.
The kinda people who know what Autopatcher is will know how to bypass WGA, if not, a simple google search is all that they need to do

WGA is the technological equivalent of asking "Did you steal this software?" Answer "no" and it'll go "oh, OK then".

    Well, more or less.

Although I never used autopatcher, and while I can understand why Microsoft did what it did, I'd have thought it would have been better to acquire their IP.

RyanVM for you people who used AutoPatcher.

Not sure if he'll have to stop hosting the patches because of this though.

Its already crossed my mind Craig. I use RyanVM a lot (even have a few plug-ins of my own about somewhere) and would be even more gutted if they stopped his slipstream updates.

Re: Microsoft have killed off autopatcher...

Theres only one reason it was shutdown - and it wasnt security. It is because WGA could be bypassed.

Autopatcher had contacted MS ages ago and asked them if they could continue what they were doing and they didnt receive any comment or reply. Now the only change from then is WGA.

Re: Microsoft have killed off autopatcher...

WGA can be bypassed with around one line of code in a certain file on your HD.
Really, if WGA is the reason, its a very poor one.
